This was Handel’s first opera for London, first performed at the theatre in the Haymarket in February 1711. It was strong in both music (including recomposed versions of some movements that Handel had previously written for his operas in Italy) and staging: a contemporary described the opera as ‘filled with Thunder and Lightening, Illuminations and Fireworks’.

Let Me Weep (‘Lascia ch’io pianga’) is an aria from Handel’s opera ‘Rinaldo’. According to reports he composed the music for the complete opera in just 14 days, using many melodies from earlier works. The melody of this wonderful aria is known all over the world and this arrangement by Jacob de Haan retains all the passion of the original.

Film music is usually written to match the action in a scenario. Sometimes the opposite is true as is proved by Jacob de Haan’s piece La Storia. Written for creative musicians and audiences, the listener is given the opportunity of making up his own story to fit the music, without even the restriction of composer’s comments. Handel composed his first Italian oratorioLa Bellezza ravveduta nel trionfo del Tempo e del DisingannoHWV 46a in 1707. It is based on an allegorical moral libretto written by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili who also commissioned this work.Disinganno (Illumination) and Tempo (Time) try to get the young, beautiful and frivolous Bellezza (Beauty) to recognise the true values of life and to act accordingly. The audience accompanies Bellezza in her spiritual development, in which she increasingly distances herself from Piacere (Pleasure) and listens more and more to Tempo and Disinganno. The oratorio contains some of the most beautiful music Handel ever composed. This includes the enchanting ariaLascia la spina, in which he uses the music of the sarabande from the operaAlmira, composed in Hamburg in 1704, and which then achieved immortal fame inRinaldo(1711) asLascia ch'io pianga.

G F Handel (1685-1759) was a German-born British composer and organist who spent his life working in London. He is credited with popularising opera in Britain, both importing Italian works, and composing his own. Rinaldo was composed in 1711, and was the first opera written in Italian for the London stage. The libretto was written by the Italian poet Giacomo Rossi.
