Albion was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Federation as the test piece for the National Brass Band Championships of England, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Switzerland in 2001, and for Norway in 2002. The composition is dedicated to Markus Bach.Albion, along with Excalibur and Stonehenge, is the third major piece for brass band in which Jan Van der Roost took his inspiration from the British Middle Ages. Although the work is not based on an actual story there are unmistakable epic elements found in this symphonic poem. The piece paints a picture of the conquest of Albion (the earliest known name of the British Island), in which the listener is taken back to the timeof King Arthur and his legendary Knights of the Round Table. This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

In Concerto d’Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life. This work, reminiscent of a film score, describes the history of the Dutch town Horn. A broad lyrical theme, played by the horns, depicts the history of this town on the river Meuse. A cheerful Allegro represents rural life around the town and its castle. Following this the horn theme returns and the music changes dramatically. A drum roll symbolises the times of war that the town and castle have known. The threatening music eventually develops once more into the hopeful horn theme, a sign of reconstruction and the future.

In this ambitious series, Bryan Johanson and Jesse McCann seek to address this missing element in the study of classical guitar. In light of the sheer volume of guitar music written over the centuries, not to men- tion early works by the guitarâs plucked-string relatives, the authorsâ choices were by necessity limited to a select group of standards. These might be considered among the most popular works in the guitar canon, admired over the years by performers, students, and audiences alike for their beauty, musical expression, and idiomatic sonority. There are, of course, other pieces that could have been included. But by choosing works that give a broad survey of styles across musical periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and early 20th century) written by some of the guitarâs most important composers, the authors present a com- prehensive cross-section of the essential repertoire for the instrument.- William KanengiserDans cette série ambitieuse, Bryan Johanson et Jesse McCann cherchent à aborder cet élément manquant dans l'étude de la guitare classique.
