The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. Though clearly inspired and influenced by Jewish experience, they are purely concert pieces, and do not provide any specific liturgical significance. The first movement, Prayer, is a deeply heartfelt plea to the almighty. As Neil W Levin writes, The initial four-note motive in the minor mode, together with its elaboration in the ensuing phrases, sounds as if it might have served as the skeletal model for Max Janowski's (1912-1991) now well-known setting of the High Holyday prayer Avinu Malkenu. This prayer has special meaning in my own spiritual life, as I have been singing it since my childhood. Both Prayer and Janowski's Avinu Malkenu are cantorial in nature, to be sung with heartfelt pathos. The second movement, Supplication (the act of begging humbly), has more angst, almost a sense of urgency as a result of the rhythmic motor in the piano. The third movement, Jewish Song, evokes a quintessentially Eastern-European melancholy. Its falling motives with bent intonation might represent the pain of the Jewish experience. The works were dedicated to Dutch-American cellist Hans Kindler, a highly influential musician of his time, and founder of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kindler was the soloist for the world premiere of Bloch's most celebrated work, Schelomo in 1917.Though the popularity of Bloch's oeuvre has been dominated by works of Jewish connection, we should not forget that Bloch had many other stylistic periods, including Franco-Belgian, modal, serial, and even American folk. In 1927, he was awarded Musical America's composition prize in a unanimous vote, despite being regarded as an outsider by American music writers at the time. His winning work America (1928) was performed by every major orchestra and conductor in the following seasons. May we be proud of his contributions to American music. The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is a gently adapted “jazz-flavored†setting of the slow movement from Bach’s Sonata in Eb Major. Solo parts are provided both for C Flute and for Alto Flute. With a fairly close rendering of the authentic flute line and more contemporary chords in the piano part, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is an inviting way to play music with a modernized jazz sound, while reading traditional classical notation.Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, Siciliano (Reimagined) never strays far from the source, except for its reharmonization. Occasional jazz-infused touches give the melody a fresh perspective, without diluting its purity. I am always moved by how beautifully the music of the 18th century and contemporary music coexist.Performers may play this arrangement in the Baroque style.

Franco Cesarini has written this piece for concert band as a tribute to the town of Bisacquino (Palermo, Italy) of which he is an honorary citizen. The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada, Pavana,Gavotta, Barcarola, Tambourin, Siciliana, Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo, and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque tothe colorful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the “pupiâ€, which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion intoancient traditions of this beautiful island!

For classical orchestra with woodwinds, horns, and trumpets in pairs. In two movements. The Introduction sets up the second movement by exploring the characteristic dotted rhythms and the intervals found in the Siciliana theme. The timpani have a prominent part in the Introduction, and woodwinds and brass have solo passages throughout. The Siciliana theme is static, and changes tone color rather than developing, while a narrative evolves in the accompaniment. While the introduction is energetic and almost boisterous at times, the Siciliana is envisioned as being heard through a glass dome, soft and remote throughout. Orchestra [2222; 2200; timp; stgs] Duration: 7’ Composed: 2017 Published by: Michele Caniato Music Performance materials available on rental only:.

Largo Siciliano is a slow dance movement in a simple metre comprising a sequence of variations, separated by a refrain; a single idea is continually reworked and recast. This idea, or little siciliano, is a reference to Mode de Valeurs et d'intensites, written in 1948 by Messiaen with whom the composer studied. He writes: 'From this piece sprang the whole development of 'total serialism'. But Messiaen's piece was not serial, and nor is mine. What was originally considered as a study or experiment is, for me, a point of departure for quite different expressive intentions'.

Hailstork’s beautifully lilting SICILIANA for solo English horn is actually structured as a recitative and aria: a dramatic prelude serves as a soliloquy with question-like pauses, teasing our ears forward. This opening unfolds into a gorgeous rendering of the traditional 12/8 dance form, full of soaring melodies and elegant arabesques. SICILIANA’s technical demands are within the reach of students looking for unaccompanied contest repertoire, while the expressive potential is enticing for advanced players in any setting. This 6-minute work has been recorded for Navona Records by Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Giuseppe Sammartini, who was considered to be one of the most important composers of instrumental music of his time, maintained in this concerto a conventional framework; however, he used the instrumental possibilities particularly in the dialogue between the solo instrument and the orchestra with imagination and in an unusual way. The movements: Allegro * Siciliano * Allegro assai.
