Scherzo from Op. 4 is a charming presto for string orchestra. It is based on the third movement of Sibelius's String Quartet B-flat major, on which the composer added a double bass part. The premiere of the string orchestra version took place on 17 February 1894 in Turku, composer conducting. Reviews were enthusiastic: Sibelius's music appeared in its most beautiful splendor and instrumental brilliance in the Presto movement, where the singing motive was carried out with charm and beauty - -, cascades of diligently and brilliantly composed scherzo-figures and melodies [give a] thoroughly delightful and frisky, lively character..

Symphony No. 4, also known by the composer himself as the Romantic was written in 1874, but revised several times and premiered in 1881 in Vienna. The subtitle actually does not refer to romantic love, but a medieval romance such as some of Wagner's operas. The movement titled Scherzo is full of adventure and vitality with a relaxed middle section. Bruckner himself hinted that the Scherzo movement was a Jadthema or hunting theme and Volkfest or people's festival. The hunting horns are calling, the brass are blowing their fanfares and it is a good day to be hunting. The main feeling from this movement is a strong feeling of the great outdoors. Mr. Johns has arranged this work for 14-part brass ensemble including optional Timpani. The instrumentation is: 4 Trumpets (including piccolo, C, B-flat and Flugelhorn), 4 Horns, 4 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba (optional Timpani). This work is suitable for advanced performers and is about 5 minutes in length.

Brahms' Piano Symphony in the Urtext of the complete editionJohannes Brahms enjoyed a bit of understatement every now and then, and whenever his second piano concerto was the object of discussion, he called it his little concerto - although it was more than clear that, with its four movements (including Scherzo), he was giving his contemporaries something truly symphonic to chew on. The press didn't hesitate long: soon it was being derisively called piano symphony, which, however, did nothing to prevent its popularity. Brahms himself and other pianists played the work everywhere in the 1880s, and the piano reduction was so successful that it had to be reprinted three times within three months after its first printing. The Urtext edition follows the text of the respective volume in the Brahms Complete Edition published in 2013. It takes the first printing of the score as the main source; moreover, both the autograph as well as the printed reduction provided further information with which engraving errors of the first edition could be corrected.

Of the early versions of works included in this volume the first versions of the notably popular Consolations cycle and Grand solo de concert (published in 1850) are of particular interest. In the first version of Consolations the third movement was a style hongrois piece whose thematic material was later used by Liszt in his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1 (published in 1851). The first version of Grand solo de concert shows that the work did not originally include a slow middle section to be recapitulated towards the end as seen in the final version. This is a characteristically Lisztian feature that would reappear a few years later in his Sonata in B minor. A detailed preface inHungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition's contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included. Of the early versions of works included in Supplementary Volume 10, particular interest is expected in the first versions of the notably popular Consolations cycle and the monumental Grand solo de concert of 1850. In the first version of Consolationsthe third movement was a style hongrois piece whose thematic material Liszt used again later in the first piece of the Hungarian Rhapsodies published in 1851. The first version of the Grand solo de concert shows that the original concept did notinclude the slow “movement†that would be placed in the middle of the work and recapitulated towards the end in the final version - a characteristically Lisztian feature that would reappear a few years later in the Sonata in B flat minor.A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research result and, numerous manuscript facsimiles make the practical paperback version of this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value.
