Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. The discovery of authentic parts in Schubert’s own hand by the editor Bernhard Paul including many important performance directions as well as additional parts for trumpets and timpani has prompted a new publication of the mass in G which becomes the authoritative edition of this popular work.

This Mass composed in 1815 but not published until 1846 has great depth whilst also being lyrical and climactic. It was originally set for Soprano Tenor and Bass Soli SATB Chorus Strings and Organ (some years later Schubert added parts for Trumpets and Timpani); however this Schirmer edition of the vocal score contains a piano reduction by Alice Parker.

A warm adagio introduction breaks into a joyous ?Hosanna? chorus in this 44-measure homophonic masterwork. Taken from Schubert?s Mass No. 4 this edition offers sensible vocal ranges editorial dynamic and metronome markings plus a complete IPA guide for the brief Latin text. The orchestral parts have been reduced to a playable piano accompaniment while preserving the Classical characteristics of the original work.

Even for small choirs Schubert?s Mass in G major poses no scoring or performance problems and is thus ideal for use in church services. The work is full of surprises and musical ideas.
