Three Rags for Clarinet Quartet. Par JOPLIN SCOTT. Qui dit Scott Joplin, dit ragtime. Surnommé « le roi du ragtime », ce pianiste et compositeur américain (1868?1917) a écrit une bonne centaine de rags, parmi lesquels les célèbres « Maple Leaf Rag » et « The Entertainer ». Ce genre musical se reconnaît aisément : une mélodie syncopée accompagnée d?une ligne de basse régulière au rythme simple. Comme ces deux éléments sont en partie décalés et, parfois, se contrarient même, la musique swingue beaucoup. « Rag » signifiant « lambeau », le terme « ragtime » provient donc de cette impression de déchirement entre mélodie et ligne de basse. La plupart des rags sont écrits pour le piano. Ils ont joui d?une immense popularité au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, principalement grâce à Joplin lui-même. Après sa disparition, l?ère du ragtime en tant que courant dominant s?acheva. Les années 1970 ont connu un regain d?intérêt pour Scott Joplin, surtout grâce au succès cinématographique The Sting (L?Arnaque), dont la bande sonore comprend plusieurs de ses compositions, y compris « The Entertainer ». The Easy Winners was composed by Scott Joplin in 1901 and is said to be one of his favourite rags. In the current revival of Joplin's rags The Easy Winners enjoys a special popularity which it justly deserves. It has been skillfully arranged for Woodwind Quintet by Anthony Iannoccone.The score and individual parts are all included.

This collection by Philip Godfrey contains three short pieces in tribute to Malcolm Arnold Gerald Finzi and Scott Joplin all scored for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment.

Arrangeur: Teil Buck. This volume consists of six rags composed by Scott Joplin, arranged for oboe, clarinet and bassoon (trio d'anches) by Teil Buck. The Maple Leaf Rag was first published in 1899 and as a result of its popularity, Joplin was from then on referred to as the 'King of Ragtime.' The Palm Leaf Rag was composed in 1903 while Joplin lived in St. Louis, Missouri and was composed at the same time as his first opera, 'A Guest of Honor,' which was subsequently lost. The Swipesy Cakewalk was composed in 1900 by Scott Joplin along with his composition student Arthur Marshall, whose family he lived with during the late 1890s. The title of The Easy Winners comes from the same sporting expression in which an athlete wins an event without difficulty, and the original cover depicted scenes of baseball, football, horse racing and sailing. The Favorite was composed in 1904, and although not much is known about it, its publication came around the same time as three other famous rags, 'Cascades,' 'The Sycamore,' and 'The Chrysanthemum.' The last piece in the collection, The Entertainer, is one of the most recognizable pieces of music ever written.
