This facsimile of an original by Nicolas-Antoine Lebegue is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : s. d. =1687. This facsimile reproduces the copy in the British Library, the only complete exemplar. A modern edition, already dated, is based on the incomplete copy from the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. This second book of harpsichord pieces is interesting for several reasons: the very typical pieces of the suite are classical models most of them are of limited difficulty and therefore playable by young pupils these pieces date from a key period during which both pre-classical ornamentation (see the book of motets by Lebegue) and the emerging classical ornamentation were used. The preface by M. D. is remarkably well documented. The engraving is very clear. Magnificat is a tribute to the unaccompanied motets of favourite composers from several eras - in particular those of Dufay, the Eton Choirbook, Robert Carver, Lassus and Bach. The work is therefore full of contrast in texture, harmony, mood and pacing, and exploits the resources of unaccompanied chorus in a manner not only analogous to those already mentioned but also to ensemble or orchestral writing. Naturally - given the sentiments of the text - the mood is predominantly joyful and exuberant; but the darker implications of certain phrases in the text are not ignored. Towards the end there is a big choral explosion on one of the traditional plainsong chants for the Magnificat, before the work subsides into a coda of calm serenity. Magnificat was commissioned by the ORA choir. It is dedicated to the French composer Betsy Jolas, in celebration of her 90th birthday, and in equal celebration of our mutual love of many choral composers mentioned above.

This second part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1904 and 1914. Most are sacred works, including the great motets op. 110 (Mein Odem ist schwach, Ach Herr, strafe mich nicht!, O Tod, wie bitter bist du), the Acht geistliche Gesange (Eight Sacred Songs) op. 138, and the fragmentary Vater unser. Functional liturgical music is represented with the Easter motet Lasset uns den Herren preisen, the Vier Kirchengesange (Four Church Songs) and the English-language Responsories. With the secular works, the Zwolf Chore aus dem Volksliederbuch (Twelve Choruses from the Volksliederbuch) form a substantial portion, flanked by Reger's setting of Good Night written for a school book, and the Abschiedslied for Fritz Stein.
In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). As a Hybrid Edition it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.For the first time, in this edition the digital component for this volume will no longer be supplied on a data storage device, but published in an online portal.

The sacred choral works of Lajos Bárdos, more than a decade after the composer?s death, are being performed more and more often worldwide. These pieces, among which every type is represented, from the simplest folksong harmonization to the large-scale motet, appear in revised form, in some cases re-edited by the composer, and are arranged according to their liturgical function and textual content. Vol. I/4 is divided into two major parts: the first contains the choral works about Jesus, the second those about the saints, in the alphabetical order of their titles within the cycles. All existing Latin text versions are included.

The title's Third Word of Creation refers to verses from Rilke's Book of Hours which indicate the fear of what other delicate experiments God might come up with after 'light' and 'man'. Schultz contradicts the text by combining it with the monolithic beginning of the First Book of Moses in the Old Testament, which is imbued with the rightness of God's actions, as well as with lines by the Persian poet Rumi in the translation by Friedrich Ruckert. The latter indicate the comforting certainty of rebirth as ahigher being up to the unfathomable spirit of God. The composer accomplishes the feat of weaving all three levels into a complex, ethereal structure in which the words nevertheless always remain clearly understandable.
