Carl Smith's experience as a musicologist and performer specializing in early keyboard literature combines with inspiration from Italy's art and culture to form a collection of short organ pieces that are suitable for small and large organs. Two works are based on hymns from the Advent and Christmas seasons (Conditor alme siderum and Silent Night). The others are original pieces of varied character suitable as service voluntaries or recital selections.

Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many. The Max-Reger-Institut (MRI), located in Karlsruhe, Germany, has initiated the first ever scholarly-critical edition of works by Max Reger. The Reger-Werkausgabe (RWA) is sponsored by the Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur and with its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the editorial techniques. The seventh and final volume in the series of organ works includes, in chronological order, the organ pieces Max Reger composed in 1904 and 1906 in Munich, in 1912 in Berchtesgaden, in 1913 in Kolberg, and in 1915 to 1916 in Jena.

This anthology is an engrossing introduction to the organ composer Theophil Forchhammer and, with its 35 works, provides an ideal cross-section of his oeuvre. There are 18 free pieces in which Forchhammer, a contemporary of Reger, manifests his Romantic spirit; and 17 chorale settings which this new edition presents in commonly encountered keys and which do not coincide with Forchhammer's 11 chorale settings contained in hier preisen auf der Erd (EB 8628/29). A rarity - and first edition! - is the Orgelweihe (Organ Consecration) in which Forchhammer incorporates no fewer than 13 melodies from Advent to Pentecost.

The performance of these genre pieces requires extremely colourful playing on the organ. The occasional registrations and changes of manual in the manuscripts indicate that Dezso Antalffy-Zsiross stressed even the shortest musical idea, if need be, at the expense of playing with one hand on two manuals. His manner of performance was never metronom-like but shaped with munch agogic which never failed to exert a tremendous effect on his audience.
