The Dresden Kreuzkantor Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the composers whose works have been rediscovered in recent years. Previously almost forgotten, today he is rightly attracting increasing attention. Celebrated by his contemporaries to be accepted as the best church composer, his works are disseminated in countless copies and also frequently in arrangements. The complete, surviving works were examined for this first, exhaustive thematic catalog of the works of Gottfried August Homilius. Not only every work, but also every individual movement is provided with a music incipit and information concerning scoring, and different versions of a work or surviving versions are presented, as well as a list of all known manuscripts, editions, libretti, new editions and, whenever possible, arranged chronologically and geographically. Thus not only a reliable catalog of the works of the Dresden Kreuzkantor is presented here, but also a good deal on church music tradition and church history in the second half of the 18th century is examined and placed in perspective. The volume includes various tables and indexes which amplify the contents of the catalog and in addition important kantors and copyists from Homilius's era are presented in a lexical appendix.

This edition includes three piano works by the German-Jewish composer Hans Samuel (1901-76), who was active primarily as an organist and composer of organ music. The selected works - Hassidic Hanukkah Tune: Al hanissim we al hapurkan (1946), Sounds of Slichoth: Paraphrases on S'lichoth Tunes According to the Ashkenas-Western Mode (1957, dedicated to the composer's parents, who perished in Theresienstadt), and Variations on a Yemenite Tune (undated) - were composed after Samuel's emigration to Palestine in 1939. Besides exemplifying the heightened awareness of diverse Jewish musical traditions that characterizes Samuel's music after his emigration, these works are representative of Israeli immigrant composers' early struggles to attempt to define their new nation musically.

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

Johann Kuhnau (1660-1720) is a composer whose fame is connected with a single work of a rather comprehensive oeuvre: There is hardly an organist who has not played his first biblical sonata 'Der Streit zwischen David und Goliath'. With the biblical sonatas and even his printed piano booklets which stand out for their relatively easy playability, Kuhlau primarily wanted to reach the circles of middle-class music lovers in which domestic music played an important role. Although he left an extensive repertoire for keyboard instruments, the original organ works take up only little space. The new edition of selected works, 'Ausgewahlte Werke', contains not only 'Der Streit zwischen David und Goliath' but also two preludes and fugues in G and B flat major, a sonata in B flat major as well as a toccata in A major and a fugue in G minor. As the second volume of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini, a critical new edition of his compositions for orchestra has been published in the series Musical Works. In addition to the familiar Preludio a orchestra (SC 1), Preludio sinfonico (SC 32), Trio in Fa (SC 52) and Capriccio sinfonico (SC 55), the volume contains a short but unknown Adagetto (SC 51), probably a sketch of a composition from Puccini's student years in Milan. And, for the first time ever, it also includes an orchestral version of the Scherzo in La (SC 34) from 1882, a work which was just recently discovered. The Scherzo, known until now only in a version for string quartet, complements the Trio in Fa, which is scored for the same orchestral forces, to form an independent movement.

Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella. The University Choir Lille MUKO and soprano Else Torp, conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen. For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works, not least from the 20th century, but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fully demonstrate the wide range and originality ofDanish choral music: the particular, lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom, such as Vagn Holmboe, Bernhard Lewkovitch, and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin, including Hans Christian Andersen, Johannes V. Jensen, and Tove Ditlevsen. This first part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1890 and 1902. It includes functional music for use in the Catholic liturgy (Opus 61 and WoO VI/12, 19) and the Protestant liturgy (Opus 79f and WoO VI/17, which provides chorale-based four-part settings for a complete church year). Reger wrote both secular folk song settings (WoO VI/10, 11), as well as sacred (WoO VI/13, 14). His Drei Chore [Three Choruses] op. 39, very demanding both compositionally and tonally, were dedicated to renowned choral societies, almost professional in standard. Palmsonntagmorgen WoO VI/18, written as a commission, forms a bridge to Reger's later motets to a certain extent. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice.
