“Sentences is a thirty-minute meditation, in collaboration with Adam Gopnik, on several episodes drawn from the life and work of Alan Turing. Turing lived, in a sense, many different lives, but at the heart of his work was, I think, a very musical set of anxieties. Even the idea of code-breaking is inherently musical; the French for score-reading is déchiffrage: deciphering. His wartime work on the Enigma code translated, later in life, to a more nuanced relationship to code in the form of a primitive but emotionally (and philosophically) complicated artificial intelligence. The piece uses a single voice not to speak necessarily as Turing, but as a guide through these various episodes.I've always felt that the question of sentient computers is wildly emotional: we anthropomorphise the Mars Rover, imagining its solitude on that dusty planet. Any act of communication in which the second person is unseen can be a one-way conversation. An email, sent, can never be returned - did it arrive or did it not?, or a text message can be delivered but never read. The thrill of a fast response is immediately tempered with the harsh but empty rudeness of an out-of-office reply. Anybody who has made a condolence phone call only to hear the voice of the deceased on the outgoing answering machine message knows the complexities of what could be a simple binary communication.” –Nico Muhly.

'Talking whilst playing the drum is not something unique. We can find it in traditional Indian percussion, and in jazz when musicians accompany their play with 'Sprechgesang'. This piece goes the opposite way: It begins with the percussionist speaking nonsensically, the emphasis on the rhythm, which he then passes on to his instrument. Like the pure, childish joy of repeating the same word in a different tune, the soloist teaches his instrument to speak until the drums start to talk themselves. Several poems form the basis; in the first two movements it are three poems by Sandor Weores, and in the third movement it is a poemby Jayadeva. Each sentence has a more complex form than the one before. Rhythms form words, words form sentences, and sentences create a narrative.' (Ann-yi Bingol).

Ever-creative Orlando-based composer Bob Schaefer has penned this original music for the poetic English ranslation of the Pentecost Sequence. Men and women of the choir alternate the first two musical sentences and are joined by the assembly on the last phrase of each verse. With this simple four-part vocal texture, Bob continues to compose sensible, practicable music that fills a liturgical need. You will find yourself coming back to his writing time and again.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed in 1969, Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity is an example of Messiaen's use of Serialism. The composer first used what he called his musical alphabet in Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, where the alphabet includes motifs for the concepts, 'to have', 'to be' and 'God'. Furthermore, 'sentences' depict the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Messiaen's musical alphabet, which he also described as communicable language is explained as a preface to the composition Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. Divided into nine sections ('meditations'), a typical performance lasts about 74 minutes. Messiaen's Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity is essential to all advanced, virtuoso and contemporary organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire..

Kafka's ouvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him - I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear - could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. Christian Jost.

Olga Neuwirth's string quartet, written in 2009, is a homage to the American artist Henry Darger and his only posthumously discovered, richly illustrated book manuscript of the same name. Neuwirth associates this overabundance of ideas with short, strikingly contrasting sentences in which fragile textures overlap. Neuwirth's third engagement with the genre string quartet was premiered in 2010 by the Arditti Quartet in Paris.

Altes Lied by Heinrich Poos for mixed a cappella choir (SSATBB) is a three-part sacred work which addresses a topic that had been frequently taken up in old times as well - love. In this case a tragic story: 'bin tot im Herzen' ['am dead at heart']. The very quiet, short sentences testify to the persona's grief and sorrow in German and Latin, with the pain of the broken heart becoming apparent again and again. Altes Lied is easy to study and practise and, due to its chorale-like structure, will not cause any difficulties for choirs. Poos has written a thought-provoking piece with which you can make your audience fly in thought. Latin & German.

In a magazine with reports on mental institutions, Thomas Larcher came across interviews with patients: 'These sentences are of a strong inner power, yet do not claim to convey an overall picture of these people. There rather appear snatches from their world like a stroboscope.' The soprano part in Larcher's composition attends to these texts in a very restraint, often introverted manner, but they continue to have an effect in the instrumental parts, like catalysts of seemingly disturbing processes. The world premiere with Juliane Banse, Christian Tetzlaff, Nikolaj Schneider and the composer on the piano took place at the renowned festival 'Spannungen' in the power station of Heimbach in 2002. Recently, a recording has been released by ECM New Series.

Mother Teresa liked to surprise people she met by giving them a small card printed with five concise sentences instead of a calling card. The brief text on the card beginning with the line “The fruit of silence is prayer†was a summary of her vision of devout, peace-promoting philanthropy in poetical form. In 2013, I created a musical setting of Mother Teresa's “Prayer of Peace†which was commissioned by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival for mixed choir a cappella (C 55851) in the form of a densely woven elegiac sound stream. Slightly later, I extended the work to produce a version with piano (C 56345) which in turn became the basis for a setting scored for mixed choir with string orchestra which was first performed in Riga in October 2014. In 2015, the versions for piano quintet (ED 22450) and string quartet (ED 22723) also permitted my musical setting of Mother Teresa's words to be performed without choir in two traditional genres of chamber music. The current published version for mixed choir and organ extends the work series through a further conventional scoring.
