Joseph Horovitz. Suite of five pieces for brass quintet: two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. Full Score. This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records, by the Hallé Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world. The Suite consists of five movements, all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre, Music Hall, circus and cabaret, so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. The titles of the short movements are: Soubrette Song, Trick Cyclists, Adagio Team, Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls. The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner, but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title. / Scores

This new version however asks for a different scoring of three Bb Clarinets and one bass Clarinet. The work’s main purpose is to play with two possible meanings for 'short cuts'. That is both with the idea of sharp and cutting musical gestures and the idea of taking a different shorter path to reach a specific destination. But most of all it was written thinking of the wonderful sonority and the rare qualities of the ASQ to whom the work was dedicated.

Fanfarer-Danmarks Radio for Orchestra BVN 351 was composed by Rued Langgaard in 1948. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2/4.3.3.1/timp/2 perc/org/str. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk This extremely short orchestral piece was composed 7 May1948 in Ribe. Exactly between 5:45 and 6:45 in the morning(“normal time”). Rued Langgaard indicates the time of dayin both the sketch for the composition and the fair copy of thescore. Fair-copying of the score took place on 10 May 4:30 to6:00 in the morning (“summertime”) after it should be noted Langgaard had taken his obligatory morning constitutional inRibe (he suffered from insomnia and arose in the early morninghours). After the work’s final measure Langgaard wrote:“Short razor-sharp line of thought in music excluding allextraneous ‘developmental’ fussiness and with lightning fastmovement in all the parts”. The same day 10 May he sent thescore as program suggestion to the State Broadcasting Servicein Copenhagen under the title Denmark’s Radio Fandfare forGrand Orchestra – “fandfare” as a sarcastically meant spellingmistake with an allusion to “the Devil” (fanden = the Devil inDanish). Langgaard had as is known an ambivalent relationshipwith the State Broadcasting Service. The work was not acceptedand the score was therefore returned to Langgaard whonevertheless submitted it again. The State Broadcasting Serviceclearly regarded the piece as a joke from the composer’s side.When Langgaard died in 1952 the unperformed score was tobe found in broadcasting corporation’s music

Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi’s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the “Gloria” as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà around 1716. In the twelve movements of the “Gloria” Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements totender transparently scored solo passages. The same mastery has also been applied to the “ Kyrie” RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. Despite the pressures of his teaching position Franz Schubert created a particularly large number of works in the year 1815. Besides around 140 new Lieder he composed the second and third symphonies four stage works the first important compositions for piano the String Quartet in G minor (D 173) and two Masses: the Mass in G major (D 167) and the Mass in B-flat major the object of this edition. Considering that the Mass in F major (D 105) was written from May to July 1814 and the Mass in C major (D 452) during June and July 1816 we can see that Schubert composed four of the six complete Mass settings which have survived from his hand within the short span of twoyears.The Mass was presumably first performed in Lichtental shortly after its completion. The fact that some partly autographic parts the organ part three soprano and three alto parts were made around 1820 seems to point to a second performance. And from Schubert’s brother Ferdinand we know that the Mass was performed a third time at the parish church in Hainburg at the beginning of October 1824 since Ferdinand played the organ on that occasion. A diploma candidate's guide to exam success: Trumpet DipABRSM.Foreword Quick Studies can be the bête noir of DipABRSM examination candidates. This need not be the case but confidence in this area will not come overnight. Nor should the Quick Study be seen as merely a longer version of the sight-reading tests encountered in the graded exam syllabus. One key difference is that a Quick Study needs to sound reasonably robust more like a 'learned' piece and less like a sketch or outline. Too many hesitations or passages bogged down by note-searching will cost you dearly while uncertain tonality coupled with woolly rhythms will undoubtedly nosedive your attempt.Misjudged tempi inobservance of critical expression markings or significant shortcomings in musical or stylistic awareness are also more than likely to jeopardise success. If it doesn't resemble a performance to you it won't to the examiners!Bearing in mind that a typical Quick Study will approximate to Grade 6 in the musical and technical demands it makes of you it should hardly be an undue cause for concern irrespective of whether you are taking a diploma in performing or teaching. After all by this point in your musical life you will have doubtless come across a sizeable number of pieces at this relatively modest level and being able to get to grips with such a piece in a short time frame is surely a reasonable expectation for a prospective diploma candidate living in the 'real world'. Diplomas are after all the first rungs on the professional ladder for a Classical musician emphatically not a grade 9 and as such they demand a significant gearing-up in mental attitude. You'll need to think more analytically not just instinctively. This new series of books targets the Quick Study head-on: all freshly composed pieces with the exam kept firmly in mind. It is not a solution in itself nor a means of short-circuiting the skills you will need to develop but a practice tool to steer you in the right direction. The

Brass Quartet-Org-Vces-Vocal Score Mfb604V-Transcribed by popular brass arranger Robert King this edition of Johann Pachelbel's Nun danket alle Gott provides an exciting performance piece for Choir Organ and a large Brass Ensemble. Pachelbel (1653-1906) is of course best remembered today for his Canon in D. However his vocal music is also significant. Nun danket alle Gott is a motet based on a short passage from Ecclesiastes. An important feature of the work is that the endings of sections are in four-part chorale settings with the sopranos singing long notes values whilst the other voices present shorter note values.King's arrangement of this historical work makes for an exciting performance.
