The Syncopated Piano Music-This collection showcases the syncopated piano music of Latin American during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features Latin rhythms which are really African rhythms brought to the Americas by slaves and appliedto the music of the European colonists. These rhythms are varied and complex and so is their history. They've had a widespread and profound influence on the evolution of popular music not only in Latin America but also in theUnited States. The most obvious offshoots are the tango in Argentine and Uruguay and most of the other popular dances of South and Central America as well as ragtime and jazz in the United States. Jelly Roll Morton claimed this'Latin tinge' is the essential element that distinguishes jazz from ragtime. These rhythms are the musical roots of groups like 'The Buena Vista Social Club.' This serious festival work relies heavily on various elements of the tango set in a more contemporary framework. While the title mainly refers to the way various tangos come and go (through multiple transitional devices) it also references the opening and closing sections which include a 'phantom sound' through the use of mild dissonance and sudden dynamic changes that seemingly appear out of nowhere. It would be much better if theycould start with some easier pieces - of intermediate level - in order to be presented to the choro language in a more gradual and appropriate manner.That is the main goal of this book. It has 13 studies (in the 13 morecommonly used keys for the choro Guitar) written in a reduced form and in the principal stylistic choro variants: besides real choros there are polkas maxixes Brazilian tangos and xotis. The more used and characteristicrhythmical figurations are present in each of the studies as the principal. Also aiming at the simplification of execution all studies were composed with only two voices (melody and bass) and with no chords (although harmoniesare quite evident due to the choro melodic particularities). Volver was originally composed by the man whose name is more closely associated than any other with the tango genre, singer/composer Carlos Gardel (1887/1890 - 1935). His birthplace and birthdate are both uncertain and are fiercely debated between France and Uruguay, but he grew up in the Abasto section of Buenos Aires and subsequently became an Argentine citizen. He introduced tangos into his repertoire in 1917, and during his career he composed some of the best-loved of them such as Soledad, Por Una Cabeza, El Dia Que Me Quieras, and, of course, Volver. As a singer he interpreted and recorded literally hundreds of tangos, and he enjoyed enormous world-wide popularity. Gardel died tragically in an airplane accident in Medellín, Colombia, in 1935, a death that plunged all of Latin America into deep mourning. The present author has attempted to modernize Volver by giving it a kind of Afro-Cuban rhythmic structure in its 6/8 time scheme, and he has provided a significant technical and musical challenge to the soloist. / Violon Et Orchestre A Cordes

For Piano Solo-One of the most exciting composers of his generation Jonathan Cole was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in 1999.In ???Go Tango??? fragments of various imaginary tangos are juxtaposed in an attempt to kick start a realtango. As these attempts become increasingly frustrated the possibility of a tango resulting from them seems ever more remote. In the coda a gentle Haba?era emerges as if from outside the preceding musical argument.
