Six Sonatas, Opus 10 - Volume II

This edition of recorder duet sonatas is intended as a corrected urtext but for its transposition to the range suitable for treble recorders. They will make ideal recital pieces for any concert.

These sonatas are a compendium of violin playing of his time and laid the groundwork for future violin compositions. Over the years the sonatas have been published innearly 100 editions all based on Corelli’s first edition which contains only the solo violin line above an unrealized bass line. Today the sonatas are well known in numerous modern continuo realizations. However a realization from Corelli’s time by Antonio Tonelli also exists and is presented here for the first time in a modern performing edition. This realization is surprising in that it contains full chords sometimes played by both hands. In addition Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition includes for the first time many violin embellishments. For the most part they have been found in handwritten documents by Tartini Geminiani McGibbon Dubourg and Roger (from a re-print of the sonatas from c. 1710). These embellishments are presented in a separate booklet which players can place alongside Corelli’s original on the music stand. Complementing this Urtext edition are a historical introduction a critical commentary and an appendix containing preludes to the sonatas for keyboard by Tonelli.

The Scherzo op. 4 from 1851 stands alongside the sonatas composed between 1851???53 as a substantial single movement that particularly delighted Robert Schumann leading him to direct the public???s special attention to his young colleague in his famous article ???New Paths??? in 1853. Written the following year the Four Ballades op. 10 complete the volume. Already they strike a new more Romantic note that Brahms described to Clara Schumann thus: ???They are not very difficult and even less difficult tounderstand???. From an earlier Belwin Mills edition, this is Volume 5 of a series of the piano works of the great Russian-American composer. Included are Rachmaninoff's Opus 28 and Opus 36 Sonatas. The Opus 28, in D-minor, in three movements, was completed in 1907 and was introduced in Dresden, Germany. The Opus 36, in B-flat minor, also in three movements, was written and 1913 but was later revised by the composer.

This second volume of Michel Blavet's Opus 2 sonatas contains Sonatas 4-6 arranged for Flute with Basso Continuo. The Basso Continuo can be played by the piano or there is a pull-out cello part to accompany the Flute instead.
