This Viardot Edition is the first critical edition of Pauline Viardot’s songs. It is based on fair copies of the woman composer, who was one of the most versatile singers and important representatives of the bel canto performance tradition in the 19th century. The present volume includes settings of Russian texts by Pushkin, Feth and Turgenev as well as Italian-language songs based on Tuscan folk lyrics. All songs are accompanied by German translations, which were specifically prepared for the German first edition in the 19th century.
The solo Lied with piano accompaniment was Pauline Viardot’s main genre, which she made bloom in the most diverse colors, depending on text and style. In addition to her own use, the sought-after vocal pedagogue also wrote her songs for her students. Accordingly, the songs included in this volume are suitable for different vocal genres in terms of their ranges and expressive content: for example, songs such as “Zwei Rosen”, “L'innamorata” or “Das Vöglein” are suitable for light, high voices, while lyrical, lower voices can find suitable songs with “Ruhige, heilige Nacht”, “Flüstern, atemscheues Lauschen” or “C’era una volta”. For versatile voices with a gift for coloratura, “Non vi maravigliate” is a little showpiece, while voices with the ability for dramatic accents can sing songs like “Die Beschwörung” or “Mitternächtige Bilder”. Unlike the sometimes very long Russian songs, the consistently short Italian songs are well suited as an introduction to the easier Italian repertoire. The songs depict clearly defined scenes within which the singers are able to develop their respective characters.

This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 70 songs excerpted from the chapter 'The Lasses' in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs expressingthe poet's 'passion' for his wife Jean and for 'that other species.' Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems and wrote original lyricsfor traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources letters and manuscripts to determinethe origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills. This volumeis illustrated with reproductions of paintings drawings and prints. These volumes also contain a glossary of frequently appearing Scots words and insightful historical notes for each song.

Music Minus One Trumpet-This volume 3 of the Signature Series will lean towards a jazzier concept than the previous volumes and to set that tone I chose Lullaby of Birdland as the first song! And who better to place in that #1 position than Mel Torme as the singer associated with George Shearing's jazz classic! I had the pleasure of playing with the Velvet Fog in a very memorable jazzy setting. It was in the 1960s and Mel did a two week engagement at NYC's Basin Street East with the Marty Paich Dektette Band. Let's go forward to the 21st century to my play-along version and a few guidelines on how to approach it. There are actually three approaches. First as the trumpet soloist then playing the unisonline with the horns and finally as a lead player on top of the little big band. Our next song When I Fall in Love was one of Nat Cole's many huge hits. It's a song I play often on my jazz gigs. Here's a very lush arrangement for you to explore the low and high register of the hrons meaning flugelhorn for the first chorus and trumpet for the out chorus. Notice that I hug the melody only adding ornaments here and there and a modest amount of embellishments. Please focus on the subtleties and nuances in phrasing which can't be complete captured with notation. Listening with the intention of acquiring these skills is the proper mind-set. -Bob Zottola.
