Gottwald has a knack for bringing contemporary classics to multi-part unaccompanied chorus of voices. For Webern's Im Sommerwind, he has taken all of the singable bits and assembled them into a surprisingly articulate and sensible transcription. With the voices approximating instrumental melodic lines in this lush, layered setting, the listeners can forget that they are listening to voices alone. For advanced choirs.

The collection of the main solo songs by Armas Jarnefelt was accelerated by a donation made by his son, Arvi, in Stockholm to the University of Helsinki: dozens of previously unpublished manuscripts thus found their way home to Finland. Sweden was father Jarnefelt's second home, since he spent a couple of decades as conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He concentrated almost exclusively on solo songs, the reason no doubt being that his father-in-law was Jean Sibelius, a master of large-scale form. Jarnefelt's vocal lyrics spring from the National-Romantic ethos nurtured on the archaic rune-singing of the national epic, the Kalevala, and the distant lands of Karelia. The folk-like elements of his youthful songs were in time joined by Impressionistic and in places even Expressionistic timbres. This collection is edited by Matti Tuloisela. Completed in 1914, this suite (whose title translates as Nights of Late Summer) is one of the Swedish masters last and greatest piano works, with a wistful and bittersweet quality that is quite unlike anything else. Originally to include seven sections, Stenhammar cut out two for the final version, which is the one offered here - in a handsome digitally-restored reissue of the edition first published in 1916 by Wilhelm Hansen of Copenhagen. In contrast to many of the on-demand scores now available, this one comes with all the pages and the images have been thoroughly checked to make sure it is readable. The score is beautifully printed on large size (9 x 12) off-white stock with a quality cover, all saddle-stitched in the traditional sheet music binding. As with all PLP scores a percentage of each sale is donated to the amazing online archive of free music scores and recordings, IMSLP - Petrucci Music Library.

A collection of solo songs by Einari Marvia (1915-97) edited by Matti Tuloisela. As many as 11 songs are here published for the first time. Einari Marvia contributed about a hundred solo songs to the Finnish Lied tradition established by Yrjo Kilpinen but drew his musical influences more from his teacher, Erkki Melartin, than from Kilpinen. Marvia turned for inspiration to ancient Finnish folk poetry and the nature lyrics of Finnish poets. His songs are characterised by rich musical, melodic invention enhanced by colourful, distinctive harmonies. The texts are taken from a number of sources, which proves that he read widely and was familiar with poetry. Contents: Ikavoidessa * Armahan kulku / Min karas vag * Kun mina mokoman saisin / Om en sadan van jag finge * Etaalla omani * Kuulutusmatka / Lysningsfard / Fahrt zum Aufgebot * Aamu / Morgon / Morgen * Lauantai-ilta / Lordagskvall / Samstagabend * Sade / Regnet * Unohtunut runo * Koti suviyossa / Hemmet i sommarnatten * Odotus * Serenata * Tuutiessa * Mittumaari / Midsommar * Huhtikuu / April * Maaritin balladi / Marits ballad * Olit poissa * Kulkurin kosinta / Vandrarens frieri * Tuulen kehtolaulu * Tyton laulu / Jantas sang * Talvi-iltana / En vinterkvall * Nackrosen * Kevat / Fruhling / Var * Elama / Leben / Livet * Canzonetta * Hyraily.

From Webern’s early period (pre-opus one), this tone poem is inspired by a poem by the German novelist-philosopher Bruno Willle (1860-1928), famous as a liberal and progressive thinker. Written in 1904 and first performed in 1962 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy, the piece is an impressionistic description of a summer day in the woods and fields. This full score is freshly engraved and corrected using the MOLA (Major Orchestra Librarian’s Association) circulated list of discrepancies and corrections. Orchestral parts are available for rental.
