A bold and invigorating first movement, a mysterious and tender second movement and a third movement with several mood shifts from lyrical to highly rhythmical. In 1971, Lane wrote his Piano Sonata 3 for piano. For whom this piece was intended remains unknown. Karl Tricomi, a student of Lane’s and also a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, performed its world premiere five years later in 1976 at Carnegie Hall (NY), in an all-Lane piano recital. This is the only documented performance of this piece. In 1971, Lane only composed another three pieces which were for tenor saxophone and wind band, soprano voice and piano and a trio for violin, cello and piano, which was dedicated to Paul Van Ness, the dedicatee of Piano Sonata 2.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) studied composition with Walter Braunfels and Heinrich Lemacher and conducting with Hermann Abendroth. He made a name for himself as professor at the Music Academy of Cologne, as author of musical-theoretical textbooks and as composer of major organ works. The Quartet Sonata (1971), published for the first time, is, with regard to form, a clearly structured concert piece of moderate modernism with a fast first movement in a concise sonata form, an expressive slow movement and a finale full of brio like a gigue. A rewarding piece for concerts and competitions.

St. Petersburg - Paris - Swiss exile - France - USA, these places refer to stages during the long life of a composer who greatly enriched music history by a plethora of works of different styles. Igor Stravinsky's sophisticated oeuvre has enriched almost all genres: from sonata to solo concerto, from song to opera, from ballet music to symphony The list of different composition styles mastered by Stravinsky during his creative life is just as multi-faceted: from the style of the first years influenced by his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov to the 'cubist' composition of the scandal-ridden 'Sacre du printemps' for example, from the neoclassicism of 'Pulcinella' to the twelve-note 'Movements' - right up to excursions into jazz music. As a consequence, disorientation and lack of stylistic uniformity respectively were just two of the prejudices Stravinsky was faced with. Such prejudices are countered in this book by Wolfgang Burde who illustrates that the composer never wrote 'a la mode' or 'a la maniere de', but always incorporated newly discovered compositional techniques or even specific form models in his personal way of thinking. Here, it becomes apparent why Stravinsky, according to Wolfgang Burde, ranked 'among the most important composers of the European avant-garde next to Claude Debussy and Schoenberg'.
