Facsimile Of The Draft Score and Paul Sacher'S Annotated Full Score Copy-Béla Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion composed in summer 1937 on a commission from Paul Sacher and premièred in Basel in January 1938 is incontestably one of the supreme creations of modern music. This publication with introductory essays by Felix Meyer Robert W. Wason Lászlo Vikárius and Wolfgang Rathert presents two major handwritten sources for this work from the holdings of the Paul Sacher Foundation: the draft score which offers a fascinating glimpse into the sonata's genesis and a 'whiteprint' of the fair copy which contains additions from Bartók and differs substantially from the definitiveversion at the end of the development section in movement 1. The volume also contains on an enclosed CD the radio recording of 1940 with Bartók and his wife Ditta Pásztory on the piano parts as well as a new recording of the sonata in its 'original' form played by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo with percussionists Matthias Würsch and Christian Dierstein.

It was composed between August and September 2008. It is the fifth in a series of six works for brass composed between 2006 and 2009: sonatas for Bass Tuba and Piano (2006) Bass Trombone and Piano (2006) Tenor Trombone and Piano (2007) Horn in F and Piano (2008) and Sinfonia Concertante for Bass Tuba Bass Trombone Tenor Trombone Horn Trumpet Brass and Percussion (2009). The first performance of the Sonata was given on 21 October 2009 at theRoyal Academy of Music by James Woods Davison (to whom the work is dedicated) and Timothy End.

This work was written in the winter months of 2006 for Peter Smith to whom it is dedicated. It is in three short movements which are thematically related. The work received its first performance in June 2006 by Peter Smith and Jennifer Miles. The performance led to a commission from Professor James Watson on behalf of the Brass Faculty of the Royal Academy of Music for a further four sonatas for brass and piano (for Bass Trombone Tenor Trombone Horn and Trumpet/Flugelhorn) and a concluding Sinfonia Concertante for five solo brass brass ensemble and percussion; which form a series.

The final movement of the Sonata in A major KV 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Rondo Alla Turca, is one of the most famous piano pieces of all time. Once only familiar to musical experts, later a universal piece for all piano pupils, its opening melody is now even omnipresent as an alienated sinus tone-like mobile phone ring tone. Fazil Say's arrangement, originally created as an effective encore, follows on from this popularity. After the first eight bars have been presented in original form, typical elements of jazz superimposed on the still recognisable classical foundations can be discovered, such as syncopation of the top notes and ornamentation through chromatic blue notes, embedded in the at times frenzied chains of semiquavers. In the spirit of the work's improvisatory character, Say likes to perfom his Alla Turca Jazz in different combinations, for example accompanied by jazz singers of with orchestra. It may appear strange that Fazil Say, who was born in Turkey and - when not on tour - is still resident in that country, does not bring back Mozart's interpretation of genuine Turkish music closer to its own roots, particularly as many of his compositions such as Black Earth or the Violin Sonata are characterised by a subtle amalgamation of the Classical-Romantic tradition, Turkish folk music and elements of jazz. In a further Mozart arrangement, the ballet music Patara premiered in Vienna in 2006, composed on the basis of the Rococo-like theme from the first movement of the same A-major Sonata (wich enjoys almost as great popularity as the Alla Turca theme), Say utilised the connection which was absent in Alla Turca, albeit in the opposite direction. In the ballet music, the piano symbolises Western culture and the Ney flute Oriental culture, communcated atmosperically by austere percussion instrumentation and soprano vocalisation. / Date parution : 2021-12-09/ Répertoire / 2 Pianos

Score-This work 3 Amplified Women's Voices 2 Pianos Percussion Wind and Brass was premiered by the San Fransico Symphony in February 1982. Grand Pianola Music recalls the music of Charles Ives in its creative synthesis ofvarious musical styles. Written on the occasion of Paul Sacher’s birthday this 3 Strophes Sur Le Nom De Sacher features three Cello pieces composed by Henri Dutilleux and reviewed by Mstislav Rostropovitch. It was first performed in an audition by the latter in 1982. Henri Dutilleux composed the first part of this volume for the celebration and added the final two pieces later in 1976. The whole set requires the lowest strings of the Cello to be turned lower: G string to F sharp and C string to B flat.
