Lubos Fiser (1935-1999) was one of the most talented Czech composers of his generation. Born in Prague, he studied at the Prague Conservatoire from 1952-1956 and then at the Academy of Music. He was known to the public for his many film scores but it was his other compositions, many of them written under difficult political conditions, which mark him out as a composer of significance.

Fiser's eight piano sonatas have a special place in his oeuvre. Fiser subsequently eliminated his second sonata (1956) from his compositional repertoire. From the third sonata onwards (1960), subtitled Fantasia, the composer wrote a two-movement composition, in which he continued to incorporate as his fundamental musical device the confrontation of sharp contrasts in tempo and mood. Beginning with his fourth sonata (1962-1964), Fiser created a single-movement work in an expressive, formally focused composition which betrays a progression towards greater compactness of musical shape in a concise yet effective musical testimony. The fifth sonata was written in 1974, the sixth sonata in 1978. The seventh sonata from 1985 was dedicated to Frantisek Maxian, the eighth sonata was written in 1995.

Piano Sonata No.1 was written in 1955. Fiser worked on it during his last year at the Prague Conservatoire under the supervision of Emil Hlobil. The piece is one of Fiser's early works which still respect a traditional compositional approach. Unlike his major and late piano sonatas, this sonata has three movements, each representing the traditional Classical-Romantic form. The sonata was premiered by Fiser's fellow-student and friend Antonin Jemelik in Theatre D34 on 30 January 1956.

The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (SNKLHU, 1957); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer's manuscript (kept at the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music, acquisition number 297/2006).

Tomasso Antonio Vitali was born in 1663 in Bologna and died in 1745 in Modena. His father, Giovanni Battista Vitali was one of the most famous musicians of his time. The young Vitali must have received most of his musical education from him. The present edition of Vitali's four sonatas is a selection from the composer's twelve sonatas surviving in manuscript. The four selected sonatas do not put too high technical demands on the violin so that even students with only some years violin training can safely perform them. Territorial restrictions may apply. The present edition is based on the Second Livre de Sonates pour le Violon et pour la Flute traversiére printed in Paris around 1728. Of the twelve sonatas of that volume the third, fifth and eleventh sonatas are being published here since they bear the remark Cette Sonate peut ce jouer sur la Flute Allemande.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe beruht auf der Veröffentlichung Second Livre de Sonates pour le Violon et pour la Flute traversiére, die um 1728 in Paris erschien. Sonata Sancti Mauritii was written in 1666 by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (1633?-1693) for the feast day of the patron saint of St. Mauritius Church, Kremsier, which is now Kromeriz, Czech. The date of the composition shows it to be an early work composed about two years after he joined Prince Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn's orchestra as trumpeter, composer and copyist.The source for this edition is a manuscript in the Castle Archives, Kromeriz, C.S.S.R., call number Breitenbucher IV 9.This sonata contains many features of interest to trumpeters and is an attractive piece in its own right. Two noteworthy points are 1) the use of mutes to raise the pitch of the trumpets from C to D and 2) the unusual key of g minor for the trumpets with a difficult move from the f-sharp to f-natural in the first trumpet part in measures 112-113. In the latter case, a fermata has been inserted editorially for musical as well as practical reasons.This piano reduction was prepared from a modern edition of the work with strings and continue available also from Musica Rara. The string parts are preserved here as much as possible in the sections marked Tutti. The sections marked B. C.
