Prior to 2018, the Trio Sonata of John La Montaine might as well have not existed. When ALRY Publications became the sole representative for Fredonia Press, this work was not mentioned in the catalogs, nor was any score or manuscript included in the Fredonia archives. Suddenly it resurfaced, a paper copy, bearing a handwritten inscription to Doriot Anthony Dwyer, with the subtitle for 3 Flutes or 30 Flutes or 300 Flutes. The new and freshly re-engraved edition, featuring a full score and parts, consists of three movements: Questioning (a trio version of the opening movement of his Sonata for Solo Flute), Song and Scherzo.

Boismortier is considered to be one of the most popular and most hard-working composers of his time. The original title of this sonata in A Minor indicates flutes, violins and other instruments as well suited for performance. The composer arranged the first melody part in such a way that it can be played by an alto recorder without any changes. Scored for string chorus, the sonata achieves a very good tonal effect. With soloistic scoring, three equal instruments (e.g. three violins) or three completely different instruments (e.g. flute, violin, oboe) are best suited for the performance of the upper parts.

Trio sonatas by Italian composers from the period around 1730 that specify flutes for both upper parts are quite rare. Among the earliest known are these three concise four-movement sonatas of only moderate technical difficulty by the Venetian monk and proficient amateur composer Diogenio Bigaglia, who very likely wrote them to order for a German visitor to his city. They are delightful compositions, full of grace, euphony, wit and contrapuntal dexterity, and they also show great sensitivity towards the delicate sound of the baroque transverse flute (traverso).

The individual works are expertly crafted, and collectively they contain much charming music, including two excellent three-part fugues and several dances that surely typify popular music heard in the French capital in the late 1730s. Since they were evidently written for amateur musicians, the Op. 78 sonatas are technically accessible and set in comfortable tonalites for the one-keyed flute; this makes them particularly attractive for today’s students of the instrument.

Mr. Mosier has skillfully crafted this new arrangement from Duetto II for Two Flutes or Violins, Op. 27 by Carl Stamitz. In three movements, this work truly captures the essence of the Classical Period, and provides an opportunity for string orchestras to focus on developing a clean and tight ensemble sound.
