George Frideric Handel's Sonatas Volume 1 for Violin solo and Piano accompaniment. Includes the works Sonata in A Major for violin and continuo HWV361 Op. 1 No. 3 Sonata in F major for violin and continuo HWV370 Op. 1 No. 12 and Sonata in G minor for violin and continuo HWV368 Op. 1 No. 10.

for Violoncello and Basso continuo or two Violoncellos-Two Sonatas For Violoncello And Basso Continuo or 2 Violoncelli Nos.5 and 9 from '12 Cello Sonatas' Op.2. Giacomo Basevi Cervetto (ca.1690-1783) born probably in Verona Italy who - following his move to England in around 1738 - became an important classical cellist and composer of Baroque music for Cello. He was a successful dealer in Italian musical instruments and became a member of the Drury Lane theatre Orchestra.

Performance Score and Parts-This scholarly-critical edition is based on all the known sources whether printed or handwritten that have come down to us for these frequently played pieces. By closely scrutinizing the source material the editor has arrived at interesting findings that considerably differ from earlier editions of these works. Rather than taking as her principal source Le Clerc’s 1740 print of Sonatas I to VI – an edition probably made without the composer’s consent – the editor has examined the Naples and Wiesentheid manuscripts prepared under Vivaldi’s direct supervision. The editor has also managed to identify a previously unknown source forSonata RV 44. All departures from the sources in the printed text and all editorial additions are listed in the critical report. Cellists are thus given ready access to every alternative reading including deleted bars and the many inevitable variants in articulation. A detailed preface provides essential information on sources and their assessment with a section on performance practice offering valuable suggestions on interpretation. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008). Authoritative Henle Urtext Edition of Mozart's Sonata In B Flat K.292 for Bassoon Cello and Continuo.

For Violone-Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e. unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period some of which are dated 1698.The sonatas are both inscribed on the title page Sonata Violone Solo. Col Basso per l'Organo o Cembalo. A third sonata bears the words Sonata Violino e Violoncino … di Giovannino del Violone. Giovannino (=Little or Young John) musthave been a performer and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot however be assumed to be their author.The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino (=Little Violone or Violoncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or a bass Viol and not necessarily a Violone as such. Indeed when they are played on a Violone or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument to prevent inversion of the intended harmony. (The use of a Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It is open to debate whether a Violone player owing to the very nature of his instrument would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. After Camille Saint-Saëns' firstCello sonata of 1872 (HN1057) gained fast popularity the publisher requested a second sonata for this scoring. It was only in March 1905 in the mild climate of Algeria that Saint-Saëns finally relented andcomposed a large sonata with four movements.  Saint-Saëns personally believed his Sonata For Violoncello And Piano No. 2 In F Op. 123 to be superior to his first and even thought itsthird movement the “Romanza” was an equivalent to the famous “Swan” in the “Carnival of the Animals” (HN943). Despite this the work is still overshadowed by the first sonata not leastbecause the second places greater technical and artistic demands on cellists. This Henle Urtext edition is the first ever text-critical edition of the work and offers cellists a chance to rediscover this composition.
