The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms? notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding piano arpeggiation and dislocation string instrument fingering string instrument harmonics and vibrato. Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata’s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli’s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert’s autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli’s arrangement. 

Rachmaninov’s Sonata In G Minor Op.19 is a lyrically expressive and technically demanding piece for both the cellist and pianist alike. The contrasts in expression and character are outlined with beautiful melodies and supported by rich sonorous harmonies which altogether really make this piece stand out in the repertoire for solo cello. This piece serves as a wonderful enrichment to any cellist's repertoire. The piano score is also included on a separate insert.

Violoncello and Piano-Johannes Brahms' Sonata Op. 38 in E minor for Cello with Piano accompaniment.

Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108 Fauré started work on a sonata for Cello and Piano in early 1917 thus realising a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude both works are very closely related. In the Cello sonata a sombre dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued but on account of increasing interest in Fauré?s complete late chamber music this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first criticaledition of this work. David Geringas a master of his craft supplied the markings in the Cello part.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008).
