Urtext with fingering-Haydn’s late piano sonatas Hob. XVI:40–42 (1784) and Hob. XVI:48–52 (1788-95) reveal him to be a distinctive and consummate master in terms of form and expression. These technically brilliant works the quintessence of his sonata output reflect the fresh inspiration he received in London. This new Urtext edition presents these piano sonatas in a spacious engraving. The early version of the second movement of the Sonata in C major Hob. XVI:50 is reproduced in the appendix. Comme le principal représentant de la musique tchèque à Vienne du 18e siècle, Leopold Kozeluh (17471818) a été observée principalement comme compositeur, pianiste et professeur de clavier. Beethoven?s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of Mozart?s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part. Not only does Clive Brown?s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by today?s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified. One example can be found in Beethoven?s ?Tempo di Minuetto? from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy based on C.P.E. Bach?s ?Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen? to denote a rest. This musical symbol, which was included in the first edition published during Beethoven?s lifetime, has not been addressed in any modern edition to date. In addition, a score through a chord can also not be found in previous modern editions; this denotes an arpeggiated chord.

Sonatas 1-12-As the foremost representative of Czech music in 18th-century Vienna Leopold Kozeluh (1747 -1818) was noted primarily as composer pianist and keyboard teacher. His 50 keyboard sonatas span his entire career and mark not only the transition from the harpsichord and clavichord manner to the fully idiomatic forte-piano style but also the development of the 'classical sonata' in the range of several decades (1773-1809).Until now pianists have had little chance to acquaint themselves with the complete range of Kozeluh's sonatas since few existed in modern editions. This new complete edition by Christopher Hogwood should present for the first time all of Kozeluh's sonatasfor keyboard solo. The project is divided into four volumes ranging chronologically through the published sets. La Sonate en Ré majeur est la dernière des six Sonates K. 279?284 que Mozart emporta dans ses valises lorsqu?il s?apprêtait à se rendre vers Paris en septembre 1777. Il rapporta à son père qu?il exécuta ces sonates avec succès déjà à Munich, Augsbourg et Mannheim.

Il les pourvut de nombreuses indications de dynamique et trouva aussi en ce qui concerne leur forme des solutions inhabituelles, comme par exemple le lent Rondeau en Polonaise qui fait office de mouvement central de la Sonate en Ré majeur.

Jusqu?alors réunies dans les recueils (HN 1 et 3), ces six sonates sont désormais éditées séparément avec, en sus, de nouvelles préfaces.

Mozart a dédié cette sonate à un certain Freiherr Thaddäus von Dürnitz, ce qui explique qu?on l?ait souvent appelée la «Sonate à Dürnitz». De ces six premières sonates c?est conteste la meilleure, la plus brillante et celle qui requiert le plus d?habileté technique. On peut comprendre pourquoi Mozart l?affectionnait particulièrement et qu?il ait continué à l?exécuter lui-même.

C?est de cette incomparable lorsqu?elle était interprétée sur un des nouveaux pianofortes de Stein.

1er MOUVEMENT Une première version du début du premier mouvement rédigée sur une page et demie a été supprimée par Mozart. Il a commencé à réécrire la version définitive au bas de cette même page. Le matériau thématique de ce mouvement d?ouverture (et, à un moindre degré, celui des mouvements suivants) est disposé sur une échelle plus vaste, presque plus orchestrale, ce qui constitue une rupture avec le ton d?intimité des premières sonates. L?effet de tremolo dans les mesures 13 à 16 et les annonces répétées à l?unisson du premier thème peuvent très bien se lire comme la réduction d?un tutti orchestral. Le deuxième thème, ligne mélodique plus souple, sans accompagnement dans sa mesure d?introduction, contient une chaîne descendante de premiers renversements ? formule harmonique fort prisée aux siècles baroque et classique (il y a des passages analogues dans les thèmes subsidiaires de l?ouverture de l?Iphigénie en Tauride de Gluck et le premier mouvement du Concerto Italien de Johann Sebastian Bach). Cela fonctionne comme un passage de solo par opposition aux entrées de tutti qui suivent dans la mesure 30. Le développement traverse un cycle de tonalités mineures avant le début de la réexposition dans la mesure 72.

2eme MOUVEMENT Mozart a intitulé le second mouvement: Rondeau en Polonaise. Il s?agit donc d?une danse. Les quatre premières mesures constituent une forme de dialogue (comme le thème du premier mouvement de la sonate précédente en sol majeur) et Mozart les soumet à des variations avec un certain bonheur. Il accentue le contraste entre l?exposition et la contre-exposition par des indications de dynamique.

3eme MOUVEMENT Le dernier mouvement de la sonate est une suite de variations joyeuses qui est un régal pour le pianiste, et présente, jusqu?à la variation en adagio les caractéristiques d?une gavotte. Le don spécial de Mozart pour l?écriture en variations s?y manifeste de la manière la plus brillante. L?impression superficielle de forme diffuse ne résiste pas l?examen approfondi: il ne serait guère facile d?oublier une des douze variations ou d?en ajouter une. La variation Adagio est d?un intérêt tout particulier pour les spécialistes de Mozart, car elle nous donne quelque a perçus de sa conception de l?ornementation impromptue: l?autographe n?est que pudiquement orné et il est probable que Mozart enjolivait son texte lors de l?exécution au gré de sa fantaisie. Mais une version richement ornée a survécu dans la première édition publiée du vivant de Mozart ; et il ne fait pas de doute que cette version enjolivée est l??uvre de Mozart lui-même ? qui d?autre pourrait enjoliver une musique d?une manière aussi ingénieuse? In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. This composition is in its own way meant to be a tribute dedicated to Paquito D'Rivera showing the author's appreciation for this musician as an exponent of Cuban music of the past and present century, who represents a stronghold and example for all musicians - in particular for saxophonists and clarinetists - not only in his capacity as a performer and composer but also as a cultivator of both sound worlds, the so-called classical music and its popular counterpart in its most ample interpretative spectrum. The piece consists of four movements: Allegro Moderato, Lento, Allegretto and Allegro con Fuoco. Its outstanding feature is the fusion of elements of jazz (such as the improvisation in the first and fourth movements, parts of which are accompanied by the piano with its interpretation being based on concepts characteristic of jazz or the 'tumbaos” to be found in Cuban music) and classical music. The second movement starts off with a short recitativo, followed by a mixture of phrases borrowed from contemporary music, Afro-Cuban styles and jazz, whose distinctive rhythmic cells and articulations clearly define the character of the movement and finally culminate in tempo primo. The third movement shows a certain 'casualness” and tranquility in its melody as well as in its accompaniment, including a cadenza the musician may execute at will - the movement then culminates either in an improvisation ad lib or in the mere execution of the melody as notated. The fourth movement is charged with spiritual energy. Saxophone and piano frequently trade phrases, and there is an abundance of improvised passages and jazz phrases. New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders’ Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture which in the composer’s own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile as seen from Liberty Island one icy cold January day with it’s open clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits foundin present pieces. For instance are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian’e Forte' 2nd String Quartet(1979) 'Four Compositions' (1980) and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders’ use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile which under the clear sky materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to as well as a vision of this giant contraption of concrete glass and chrome.
