Ron Babcock has composed and edited 50 amazing duets in alto clef for Trombones. These duets can be performed on Tenor or Alto Trombones and are a great way to ease into alto clef being that they are progressive. The goal of this book is to provide an enjoyable vehicle for learning and practicing in a new clef. Some of the duets are original compositions by Babcock and some are arrangements of Baroque and Classical composers.Duets 1-30 are all one-page or less in length and duets 31-50 are all two pages in length. As the book progresses, there are more difficult key and time signatures, more challenging technique and in the later duets some cadenzas. There is a wide variety of styles and forms throughout the book. The final six duets are arrangements of concertos and sonatas originally written for the Alto Trombone (the top part containing the original part), including works by Albrechtsberger, Fux, Wagenseil and Michael Haydn.

Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces. As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.Jim Self:Self (b. 1943) is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of Hollywood motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies. His tuba was the “Voice of the Mothership†in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He is Principal Tuba/Cimbasso with the Pacific and Pasadena Symphonies and the Los Angeles Opera and Hollywood Bowl Orchestras. Formerly he was in The U.S. Army Band and tuba / euphonium professor at the University of Tennessee. He holds a DMA from the USC Thornton School of Music where he is Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Chamber Music. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo tuba, brass quintet, other brass, string and woodwind chamber music, wind band and orchestra. Jim has produced many solo jazz and classical recordings. His music and recordings are available from Potenza Music and www.jimself.com. Robert Valentine, born in Leicester around 1680, was one of the few English masters of Baroque music who achieved fame and enjoyed a high standing beyond the borders of his home country instead of within. He made his fortune in Italy where he seemed to have spent most of his lifetime. It is assumed that he returned to England in 1731. He died at an unknown place around 1735.Valentine was a talented composer. Apart from some concertos, he mainly wrote and published solo sonatas, trio sonatas and duets, works who clearly show his preference for the flute, he himself being a flutist.

The first instrumental compositions Boismortier published were sonatas for two transverse flutes without bass, of which he wrote eight sets. They document both his development as a composer and the early evolution of the genre itself. The Six Sonates pour II Flutes traversieres Sans Baße Op. 47 (1733) — his last surviving set of such works — are ostensibly in the ‘Italian’ style. The dance-heavy format of the earlier ‘French’ sonatas has been abandoned, and structurally they reflect the influence of Telemann’s Sonates sans Basse à deux Flutes traveres [sic] (the second of their four movements is always a fugue). Set in tonalities comfortable for the baroque flute, these virtually unknown duets are expertly written for the one-keyed instrument and are richly rewarding to perform.

Despite the many flute pieces that he composed, Quantz deemed worthy of publication only his six Sonatas for flute and basso continuo op. 1, and the present Six Duets op. 2, which was issued in 1759. What makes them particularly impressive is, above all, the melodic substance of these works. Advanced students will find a musically and technically rewarding collection which is ideal for ensemble playing and harmonic ear training through the interplay of the two flutes. The present edition is based on the original print. The many suspensions and grace notes were resolved exactly as Quantz himself described in his flute method Versuch einer Anweisung die Flote traversiere zu spielen.
