Essercizi per gravicembalo - A cura di M. Moiraghi (supervisione E. Fadini). The 10th volume of Domenico Scarlatti?s Sonate per clavicembalo represents a crucial landmark of this series, i.e. the thirty Essercizi per gravicembalo (London, 1738-39) at the heart of the composer?s production. For a long time, the style of these sonatas and their role in the history of keyboard music has been debated. But nobody had ever examined thoroughly the key aspects of textual criticism, intended not only as a detailed reconstruction of the text, but as a philological study with a full scope. This volume is the first step in such direction. The musical text of this edition is the result of a systematic comparison of all the eighteenth century printed and manuscript sources preserving Scarlatti?s treasured Essercizi. In some cases, the edition presents an alternative version of the same sonata, based on the sources? examination and sometimes showing an intricate web of authorial variants. The detailed Critical Notes take into account all the variants handed down by the sources. Many topics are discussed in the rich Introduction, first and foremost the historical context and the genesis of Scarlatti?s sonatas. Furthermore, other important topics are investigated, such as: the relationship between the Essercizi and the rival Londonese edition by Roseingrave: the role and chronology of the contemporary French editions, known under the name of Boivin: the early interventions of anonymous performers.

Breitkopf Urtext für Flöte und Cembalo / for Flute and Harpsichord-These Sonatas for flute and harpsichord obbligato (Wq 83 - 86) were written in Potsdam between 1745 and 1755 while C. P. E. Bach was in the service of King Frederick II of Prussia. The sonatas also exist in genuine trio Sonata versions. In our present version the right hand of the harpsichordist takes over one of the concertante parts. Only when this part rests does the harpsichord fulfill the function of a thoroughbass. This edition was based an the autograph and an copies by Westphal a friend of the composer. The score reproduces the Urtext thus maintaining the characteristic features of C. P. E. Bach's writing. The articulation suggestions added by the editor in the flutepart haue been distinguished by broken lines.

Scheibe’s three sonatas for flute (or violin) and obbligato harpsichord were published by Haffner in the late 1750’s but were probably composed much earlier; they contain a significant quantity of elaborate imitative writing that is out of character with Scheibe’s later music. Although rooted in the same tradition as the sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord by J.S. Bach C.P.E Bach and composers at Berlin court of Frederick the Great these are more substantial works each having four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast scheme. For the most part they are trio sonatas the right hand of the harpsichord acting as the secondtreble voice but several movements feature idiomatic writing for the keyboard. Also interesting is the large amount of ornamentation called for particularly in the harpsichord part. While Scheibe disapproved of the excessive embellishments that Bach actually wrote into his melody lines these sonatas are nonetheless heavily ornamented albeit through the insertion of notational symbols; in addition to turns and mordents Scheibe uses no less than three different trill symbols!

The latest work the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for Harpsichord (Piano) obbligato and Violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71–74 and BWV 1036 but alsothe arrangements of the trios Wq 143–145 for Violin and Harpsichord most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs as well as a – previously ignored – early version of Wq 71 which like BWV 1036 grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Brahms not only played them in concert together with Joseph Hellmesberger but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. The harpsichordist, conductor and organist Gustav Leonhardt was considered a pioneer of historical performance practice. Between 1968 and 1978 he made harpsichord transcriptions of several of Bach?s compositions for unaccompanied violin or violoncello. Now these transcriptions are being made available to us by his pupil, the famed harpsichordist Siebe Henstra, based on the handwritten notes that Leonhardt used for his own performances.

facile - easy - leicht-Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day and it is for this reason that this first volume of Selected Sonatas is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord Organ or early Pianoforte the sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portugueseroyal families. The first volume of Selected Sonatas compiled by Kenneth Gilbert includes many of the popular and recognised sonatas. Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families his sonatas are composed with much experience understanding and expertise creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre.
