For solo Flute.Composer's Programme Note'March Sonatina is the third in a series of short sonatina-like pieces for soloinstruments and it was commissioned by the 25th Presteigne Festival of Musicand the Arts with funds provided by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and it isdedicated to this most loveable of Festivals. The first performance was given byKathryn Thomas on Tuesday 28th August 2007 at St Mary’s Church Kinnerton.It contrasts a slow opening with a quicker central section and employs a fewspecial flute effects though not to any great extent. In the middle of the piece alyrical phrase from Ravel’sminiature Prelude for piano suddenly pops up andis then varied. It was a surprise to me to find that a high F sharp on which thesonatina ends seemed absolutely the right note on which to finish. Theatmosphere of the opening section seems to me to relate closely to a number ofrecent pieces inspired by rainforests.'

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise therefore that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire his Sonatina being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra Gaubert was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed including his Sonatina for Flute and Piano which is made up of two movements the second being a homage to Schumann.Addressing many technical features including flourishing semiquaver passages a wide range lyricism intervals chromaticism and complex rhythms Sonatina is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.

Antonin Dvorak's Sonatina in G for Flute and Piano transcribed and edited by Robert Stallman from the original setting for Violin and Piano. Also known as Indian Lament it is a superb work in fourmovements composed during the same year as another of his popular works- the 'New World Symphony’ in 1893.

Eldin Burton's Sonatina for Flute and Piano was the prize-winning composition of the New York Flute Club contest 1948 and is published here as part of the highly respected Carl Fischer catalogue.

I have occasionally added some slurs where I feel the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced shown as 'dotted' slurs. Where staccati appear to be missing I have added them. I have not on the whole added expression marks. I have not changed or removed original markings.'

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Wind Divertimenti KV 439b later appeared in a version for Piano entitled Viennese Sonatinas. Arrangements of these sonatinas for Flute and Piano will provide flautists with much needed repertoire of music from this period.
