Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey & Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. Although Bartók had already completed his revision by the end of 1943, the revised edition was only issued in 1946. The pieces were published without titles in the first edition, but the folksong lyrics were included. These lyrics, deemed unnecessary for the non-Hungarian audiences, were not taken over to the American revised edition however, a significant number of pieces were provided with a title conveying their mood and their background in folk music and folk life. The American edition omitted the folk songs lyrics that seemed unnecessary to the audience there, but the titles of the first edition were replaced with English titles (some with the same meaning and some with modified interpretations) conveying each song's mood and background in folk music and folk life. The present edition - which contains the same scores as those in Volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) - is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ''corrected''. We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. This publication contains a preface and editorial comments in both Hungarian and English.

The Urtext edition (2023) of Jean Sibelius’ Five Christmas Songs op. 1 for voice and piano is based on the critical edition presented in the volume VIII/2 Works for Solo Voice Vol. 2 of Jean Sibelius Works (JSW) edited by Jukka Tiilikainen. The lyrics are included in Swedish, Finnish and English.Sakari Ylivuori's introduction illuminates the history of the beloved songs: May 1, 1913 was cold and wet. Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) spent the day at home at Ainola composing two Christmas songs: settings of poems for children by Zachris Topelius. The two songs born on that chilly spring day were Nu står jul vid snöig port (Now stands Yule at the snowy gate) and Nu så kommer julen (Now is Christmas coming). He then put them together with three Christmas carols he had earlier composed and gave the set the imposing Opus number 1. He had previously considered giving the distinction to various other works, but from 1915 onwards the Five Christmas Songs had the honour of heading his catalogue. This collection of more than 170 songs and chants without words, including six previously unavailable in North America composed by Edwin E. Gordon, is for anyone looking for more songs organized by tonality and meter to use in their Music Learning Theory-based classes. Like the first volume, these songs and chants are an excellent resource for bringing young children through the various stages of preparatory audiation, from acculturation to imitation and assimilation. The melodies in this collection are organized by tonality: major, minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian, multitonal/multimodal, chants are organized by meter: duple meter, triple meter, unusual paired meter, unusual unpaired meter, and multi-metric. As with the first volume, these songs and chants present a rich and varied musical syntax, and they are also a great way to hold a child’s attention. Intentionally without lyrics (so children concentrate on the music and are not distracted by the words), these songs should be sung by an adult using a conversational and relational approach rather than as a formal musical performance. If left free to move around the classroom and to enact movements while listening to these songs, young children will spontaneously babble and vocalize—the earliest forms of autonomous “creation†in response to the music. Enjoy! Andrea Apostoli is an author, musician, and educator living in Italy. He is president of the Italian Gordon Association for Music Learning (aigam.org). Elena Papini is trainer and supervisor for the Italian Gordon Association for Music Learning (aigam.org). She is also a Music Moves for Piano instructor and Director of the Amadeus School. .
