Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989. The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred 'Landscape' of shadows, where small shadows are formed behind other shadows, and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand, the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements, with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels, from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece, and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills that dominate the whole movement one can hear, in the second, third, and fourth parts, anticipations of the second, third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta.

Although a large proportion of Buxtehude's vocal works are sacred compositions, he also composed for secular occasions. In 1680 he composed the wedding aria Klinget fur Freuden, ihr Larmen-Klarinen BuxWV 119 for the marriage of the Swedish King Charles XI to the Danish Princess Ulrika Eleonora. At the same time the Peace of Lund, concluded in 1679 marking the end of an almost five-year-long war between Denmark-Norway and Sweden, was celebrated. The five-verse wedding poem is sung by two sopranos and bass, and the basso continuo has two violins and two trumpets as accompanying instruments in the alternating instrumental ritornelli. Whilst the first and fourth verses express joy about the peace settlement between Denmark and Sweden, verses two and three are predominantly concerned with the bridal couple. Finally, in the last verse, God is asked for his blessing both for the peace settlement and for the royal couple. The later sacred parody of the work for the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, New Year's Day, as the aria Klinget mit Freuden, ihr klaren Klarinen BuxWV 65 cannot be more precisely dated. Now the trumpets proclaim to the Christian congregation about Jesus and the brightly shining light of the divine word.

De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500, a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work, together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations, in randon order - however, each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk, home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV), who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013. De Ruigewaard is een grote polder in de provincie Groningen. Kort na de inpoldering rond 1500 ontstond er een nederzetting op de plaats waar nu het dorp Grijpskerk is gelegen.
