The spirituals created by the American Negro constitute one of the most beautiful folk song literatures in the world. Indeed in several respects the spirituals stand by themselves—- by reason of their sheer nobility of their melodies picturesque imagery the religious exaltation frequently evident in both text and music but it is the energy but it is the vitality of the rhythm that draws admirers and worshippers.
