The songs come from a collection for voice and piano by Clair Fairchild in his Twelve Persian Folk Songs published by Novello and Company, London, 1904. Fairchild's goal was to capture the spirit and ambiance of Persia's music and musicians. Fairchild took special care to preserve their authenticity by limiting western harmony. Such is also the case in this setting for concert band. Special attention should be given to replicate songlike phrasing of the melodic lines and the rhythmic integrity and style of the accompaniment. Conductors are encouraged to take liberties with dynamics and articulations to help performers play expressively. There are many inflections that exist beyond what is printed on the page. For example, the reeds might subtly shape the rhythmic accompaniment in m. 6-7, as might the trumpets with the melody in m. 18. In. m. 23, the wind musicians other than the trumpets are a part of the rhythm section with the percussion. These rhythms should fit together nicely to create a steady cadence. In the Gospel of John, there are a number of times when Jesus uses the statement “I Am,” which his followers would have automatically linked to the divine Name. Some of these statements—Christ as the Bread of Life, the Gateway, the Light of the World—are referenced in Quinn’s text, as well as the Alpha and Omega, which is found three times in Revelation. A few of these statements also appear in the refrain. The verses may be sung by a cantor or the choir. There are a number of musically effective ways to use this piece in liturgy: with the full choir, as written, simply, with cantor and assembly, or with a two-part refrain, using only the soprano and tenor lines.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based uponthe same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is gebaseerd op het liedje Suiryo-Bushi, dat afkomstig is uit de shamisen-traditie en opent met twee contrasterende statements van de betreffende melodie, gevolgd door verschillende variatieshierop, in diverse stijlen, steeds gebaseerd op hetzelfde liedje of fragmenten eruit. I'm always fascinated by how connected and small this world can seem. After some further research, I found that Illyria is also a name that appears in some fantasy fiction books and even on the TV show Angel. All of this gets wrapped into the music for this piece.It begins with a broad melodic statement by the brass. It develops further at m. 9 and then transitions to a full statement at m. 25 with plenty of imitation between upper and lower voices. A contrasting slower section follows at m. 39, which should bring out the haunting, rich sound of the ensemble. The fast section returns at m. 46 with progressively building imitation to bring back the opening gesture at m. 58. The music then is relentless to the rousing end.
