With Plenty To Chew On-Seven concert pieces including 'Carmina Banana' and other favourites!When I began putting together a few piano pieces back in 2007 I didn't imagine they would quickly spawn a thriving eleven-volume series entitled Eye-Tunes taking players from 'easy' to grade 8 level. Nor did I imagine these might trigger a further five volumes of arrangements for flute and piano two called Creature Comforts (which predictably enough are comprised of animal-inspired pieces) or indeed the three volumes in this current series Flute Pastilles. While it goes without saying that not all pieces conceived for piano will work equally well for the combination of flute andpiano I'm a great believer that a good tune is frequently one which will transcribe easily. I like to think of these cherry-picked arrangements concise though they are as being 'proper' pieces in that they can earn their keep beyond the confines of the practice room or flute lesson. From Book 1 you will find a sprinkling of more thoughtful pieces such as Wind over Goonhilly Forget-Me-Not and Follow the North Star to offset the more jaunty pieces. These in particular call for a little extra attention to tone colour dynamics and phrase-shaping with some awareness of what the piano part is doing too. Think hard about choosing your tempo for each piece as this is a major contributor to musical character and in the faster moving music aim to articulate the rhythms as crisply as you can so that the music can really spring off the page and come to life for your audience.I must acknowledge as before the inestimable contribution to the success of these pieces made by Gillian Poznansky whose suggestions over the appearance of the scores has made such a difference to how the music is likely to be played. She also came up with a fair number of the titles to these pieces and has done them further service by performing them with me to great aplomb on innumerable occasions in far-flung corners of the globe.

from the collection of Anabel Hulme Brieff-Composed on Bastille Day 14 of July 1898 Morceau De Concours is a work for Flute and Piano with simplicity of phrasing style and rhythm by French composer Gabriel Faure. This first publication is arranged and edited by scholar and Faure collector Anabel Hulme Brieff. Previous to the composition of Morceau De Concours the required repertory of pieces for the flute competition at Paris Conservatoire were principally chosen for virtuosic content. Faure who was professor of composition and in 1905 became Director of the Conservatoire wrote this little gem to provide a good test of musicianship.

Giulio Briccialdi (1818-1881) was born in Terni Italy in the Papal States and studied flute with his father until the age of 14. Following the passing of his father Briccialdi moved to Rome where he studied composition and was appointed to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia as flute teacher. He would ultimately go on to teach flute to Italian royalty including the king's brother. He also toured as a performer throughout Europe and America and finally settled in London becoming a director of the flutemaking firm Rudall and Rose. During this time he was responsible for several mechanical developments which are still in use today notably the B-flat lever. Outside ofBriccialdi's important contributions to flute instrument making this virtuoso arrangement of the popular theme would become one of his most enduring legacies. This exclusive edition of Carnival of Venice (Il Carnevale di Venezia) for flute and piano is edited arranged and performed by Sir James Galway.

Looking back now 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great CentralEuropean modernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of the new simplicity minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78) 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German it must be Blumenlieder and to me it now sounds suddenly very different more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word; but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. This work is written for the wonderful ensemble recherche and it was meeting them that made me consider making a version of

Graded jazz pieces for solo flute recently set on the new Trinity College syllabus for all 8 grades. The story behind Scatadoodledoo: 'One day when I was at home practising my flute for a Jazz gig I had a particularly hard chart with lots of key changes and I just couldn't get into the flow of it. I was thinking logically and thinking of the chord symbols and just thinking thinking thinking which anyone who improvises knows is a sure way to stop you being 'in the flow'. Being a Jazz singer I love to scat sing and so I soon found myself putting my flute down and scat singing through the chart instead. I wasn't thinking I was justscatting around with my 'do-be-doos' and I was really getting into it and enjoying myself feeling so free in comparison to when I was improvising on the flute. That's when I had the idea to sing and play on my flute at the same time... I figured that all I needed to do was practice playing on my flute what I was singing at the same time and I'd be sorted with this hard chart in front of me. I started off simply at first but the more I practised the more I found my voice and fingers working together until it literally felt like they were 'one' and I was 'singing my flute'. Then when I took my voice out of it and all that remained was the sound of my flute that feeling of 'singing' still remained and I felt a freedom in my flute improvising that had been missing before. This discovery completely changed my jazz flute playing and to this day it is still my favourite way of practising improvising. 'Scatadoodledoo' is to encourage all Jazz flautists to start thinking of their flute as the voice they are scat singing with. The pieces range from grade one through to grade eight. Although the more advanced pieces like 'scatastrophy' and 'scatterbrain' have sections where the flautist has a chance to actually play and sing at the same time it is never too early to practice this method whether it be with scales or with beginner pieces like 'Scat Walker'.
