The orchestral suite Symphonic Dances Op. 45 from 1940 is Rachmaninoff's last work. Almost at the same time, he wrote an arrangement of the piece for two pianos which he played with Vladimir Horowitz in a private setting. The Symphonic Dances were written for Peter Boonshaft, director of the Hofstra University Wind Ensemble, who premiered the work in 2009. The three movements (Gopak, Valse Triste, Barcarolle) are presented as separate publications, each with a very different spirit.
