A composition student of the late J. Clifton Williams, Robert Foster composed this work for symphonic band as a tribute to Mr. Williams. The work begins with a statement of the primary theme as a fanfare. The theme recurs later in the work in the form of a chorale, and returns even later in the energetic and rhythmic dance section. A recapitulation of the chorale follows, and the work concludes with a brilliant fanfare. This is a unique musical work and an ideal contest selection.

Annie's Gone Home, composed in the style of a spiritual, was written as a tribute to composer Bud Woodruff's mother. The tune is built on phrases of easily understandable material, but the poignant nature of the piece is marked with profundity. From the subtle bass solo to the emotional high points, the piece is inspired by this strong woman in the life of the composer.

Annies Gone Home is a tribute to my Mother, Annette Fenner Hains (19232017). Her siblings and cousins always called her Annie. She loved music, and her influence was the primary inspiration for me to go into music. Her tastes were wildly diverse, loving everything from symphonic music to Country/Western, to various styles of folk music, to pop, to marches, but she had a very tender spot for hymns and spirituals.

While it is easy to interpret grief in this music, and its presence is undeniable, it is really intended more as a song of the ultimate triumph of goodness. In her wisdom, she was able to capture deep thoughts within simple phrases, which I have also tried to capture. Her life was one of frequent struggles, yet she was inspiring to many. She emerged from every difficulty, never unscathed, but always victorious, with clear eyes and head held high, until her last battle, which brought about her greatest victory. This sentiment is what I tried to capture. If too slow a tempo is taken, that feeling is lost and a sense of grief takes over. That may be what a conductor wants to convey, but is not what I intended.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also “a premiere in Spring”. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, een schoolorkest uit Tokio, ter gelegenheid van hun veertigste jaarconcert. Deze in marsstijl geschreven compositie begint met een op een thema uit het schoollied gebaseerd koraal: een motief dat nog eens opduikt in het middengedeelte. Tetsuya Kashino, een orkestleider die zelf ook op de betreffende school heeft gezeten, is nauw bevriend met de componist: hij heeft het werk Scent of Spring gedoopt, met in zijn achterhoofd twee betekenissen: ten eerste komt deze titel in het Japans deels overeen met de orkestnaam, ook verwijst de titel naar ‘een première in de lente’. Scent of Spring iseen opgewekt, optimistisch werk dat geschikt is voor diverse gelegenheden.

Dieses Werk wurde von der Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band anlässlich des 40-jährigen Konzertjubiläums in Auftrag gegeben. Das Werk wurde im Marschstil komponiert und beginnt mit einem Choral, der auf einem Thema des Schulliedes basiert ein charakteristisches Motiv, das im Mittelteil wieder aufgenommen wird. Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody.

Die paar die hij schreef, zijn inmiddels allemaal wel erg geliefd en populair; March Willing and Able is gebaseerd op koraalmuziek en in March Bou Shu is een Japanse volksmelodie verwerkt.
