This facsimile of an original by Isidore Bertheaume is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : Paris, l'Auteur, 1787. The orchestra is modest in size: strings, 2 oboes, 2 horns. The solo parts may be played by the orchestra,s section leaders. The second symphonie concertante adds to the two solo violins either a solo viola or solo horn. For this project, which led to a concert performance at th Abbaye aux Dames, a full score was prepared and has been added to the facsimile. Symphonie Concertante in D Major - Violin, Viola, Piano - Karl (also known as Carl and Charles) Stamitz was bapized Karel Stamic on May 8th, 1745, in Mannheim, Germany. He played in the famous Mannheim orchestra from 1762 until 1770, when he moved to Paris and became known as a violinist and served as court composer to the Duc de Noailles. In 1779 or 1780 he moved to The Hague, where he worked as a violist at the court of William V, of Orange. The last years of his life were spent in Jena, Germany, where he was Kapellmeister and a teacher at the University. Stamitz died in Jena on November 9th, 1801.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique” in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this Symphony in A major, composed in 1785, Haydn provides the flute with concertante solo passages in the Adagio which was perhaps a nod to the instrument’s popularity in France at the time. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Sonata Eroica, Op. 94 (1930) is a melodious piece composed by Joseph Jongen for great organ. Dedicated to Joseph Bonnet who was the organist of the St Eustache Church in Paris, this piece is quite difficult (upper intermediate/advanced level) and requires the use of different keyboard divisions and pedals. Lasting around 16 minutes, this wonderful work is quite architectural and will astonish you by its grandeur. It is the perfect piece to include in a recital. Joseph Jongen was a Belgian organist, composer and professor of harmony and counterpoint. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome and composed numerous pieces including music chamber works, symphonies, concertos and songs. His most famous piece is the Symphonie Concertante (1926).

Premiere Etude De Concert in B minor was the first of three works for solo Piano, published in 1920 as the composer’s Opus 65. The suite was dedicated to the Ukrainian pianist Alexander Brailowsky, who is bestremembered for his virtuosic interpretation of Chopin’s complete works.

Joseph Jongen (1873-1953) was a Belgian organist and composer. A precocious talent, he was admitted to the Liege Conservatory at the age of 7,studying Fugue, Piano, Composition and Organ. He began writing music at the age of 13 and eventually composed over 200 works, though some were later destroyed. His Symphonie Concertante is considered by many to beamongthe greatest works ever written for Organ and Orchestra.
