Beethoven had been pondering over the plan of the Ninth Symphony for 30 years. He was occupied with Schiller's 'Ode to Joy' as early as 1793. From 1809 on the first drafts of the musical ideas of the work appeared among his sketches. In fact, he began the meticulous elaboration of this monumental composition only in the autumn of 1822. The first performance took place on May 7, 1824 in the Karntnertor-Theater in Vienna. Although the conductor Umlauf, the soloists, the choir and the orchestra had only a few rehearsals at their disposal to come over the extraordinary difficulties of the piece, the Ninth Symphony had a great succes, in spite of certain shortcomings of the performance. After the first performance Beethoven made some changes in the autograph manuscript. This corrected copy served as a basis for the score printed in 1826 which is beyond doubt the final and authentic version. All the more so, as the composer carefully controlled the preparation of the publication. The source of the present edition is therefore the first printed score.

The edition does justice to the principle of source criticism for performance practice. In addition to an evaluation of the sources and metronome markings, Hauschild questions the dynamic markings, notated negligently by Beethoven and his copyists.

,,Der schwierige Spagat zwischen den Erfordernissen praktischer Brauchbarkeit und philologischer Akribie ist auf einem Niveau gegeluckt, welches die Messlatte fur vergleichbare Bemuhungen beangstigend hoch legt. Since 2001 the Ninth has been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. Beethoven was preoccupied with his unique work for many years, since at least 1815, and still shortly before his death, according to the highly complex source situation. The work will now finally be available as an edition produced from the new Beethoven Complete Edition in time for the 2020 anniversary year commemorating the composer's 250th birthday. Not all doubtful cases can be clarified, not all gaps closed, but numerous aspects have been further illuminated in this edition. New findings and source evaluations taken into account here, appear, for instance, pertaining to the work's title, the tradition of the metronome indications, the contrabassoon part, and the underlying vocal text in the finale, as well as in the original rendering of the sforzato and forte markings. The edition is to be considered, according to its editor Beate Angelika Kraus, as a contribution to the understanding of a work in which there is a discrepancy between its significance in musical life and the critical appreciation of its musical text..

Text language: German. Text: Schiller, Friedrich.
It's about 200 years since Beethoven scribbled down a theme in D minor in his sketch book, which he later used, slightly altered, in the 2nd movement of his 9th Symphony. Beethoven had thought of setting Schiller's Ode to Joy much earlier. As early as 1803 Ferdinand Ries mentioned a complete setting of the text by Beethoven which no longer survives. The vocal score of the finale of the 9th Symphony is based on the vocal score made by Carl Reinecke around the end of the 19th century. The version by Reinecke, popular worldwide, closely reflects the sound of the orchestral writing, yet at the same time is remains playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this historic vocal score, in the process taking into account recent research findings. The new Carus vocal score contains rehearsal letters from all current versions of the orchestral material, and is thus compatible with all available music editions. In the presentation of this edition, particular attention has been paid to the practical needs of (choral) singers and repetiteurs.
