Often referred to as the Dean of African American Composers, William Grant Still's illustrious career contained many ground-breaking achievements. Following the massive success of his critically acclaimed Symphony No. 1, the Afro-American Symphony (1930), Still's Symphony No. 2 was premiered in 1937 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of conductor Leopold Stokowski. The work, subtitled Song of a New Race, infuses elements of blues and jazz into the classical form, creating a uniquely blended sound to reflect Still's vision of an increasingly diverse American culture. Slow, dreamy themes are expressed through lush harmonies utilizing thick textures along with solo and divisi playing. The tension between traditional and jazz idioms is felt in the push and pull of shifting tempo and tonality. Originally composed for Full Orchestra, this slightly abridged version for String Orchestra includes the original harp part, honoring the legacy of one of America's greatest composers.Often referred to as the Dean of African American Composers, William Grant Still's illustrious career contained many ground-breaking achievements. Haydn's works often contained musical jokes, and the Surprise Symphony (#94) includes the most famous of all -- a sudden loud chord in the theme of the second movement after a tranquil opening. The music then returns to its original quiet dynamic, as if nothing had happened, and the ensuing variations do not repeat the joke. As the story goes, this surprise was meant to wake up anyone in the audience who had started to doze off. This version gives students with a great opportunity to listen for pitch accuracy on their F and C naturals. Duration 2:50.

Though not as popular as his famous 8th and 9th symphonies, Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 in D minor is a masterpiece worthy of serious study and performance. The scherzo movement has been abridged and simplified from 6/4 to 6/8 for playability, but the spirit of Dvorák comes through clearly. Full of the composer's trademark hemiola, this arrangement by Todd Parrish gives melody and countermelodies to all parts and ends with an exciting, powerful conclusion. The optional timpani part gives even more strength to your performance. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
