The present Urtext edition is based on the known surviving primary sources, and also incorporates two further, previously ignored sources, including a copy of the score made presumably in Vienna around 1820.The score contains a summarizing Critical Report in which the annotations and divergences from familiar editions that seem to be particularly important are brought out through bold print. In the separately published study Die Neubewertung der Quellen von Beethovens Funfter Symphonie (Wiesbaden: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1996), there is an extensive discussion of the source dependencies as well as facts on the origin and transmission of the work.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopfs source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethovens music. (Kurt Masur)

For the present Urtext edition of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, the editor also consulted certain sources and authentic new variants for the first time; among them are the nonet arrangement made by Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries in 1807, thus with authentic variants. Thanks to his vast knowledge, the editor has uncovered a number of errors and contradictions in the sources. The basic differences with respect to other editions chiefly concern the articulation and dynamics in movements 1, 2 and 4. They can easily be found in the Critical Commentary of the conducting score.

Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopf's source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethoven's music. (Kurt Masur, 2006).

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was commissioned by the city of Leipzig to write the Symphony Cantata Lobgesang for the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. The work was given its first performance in Leipzigs Thomaskirche on 25 June 1840. Another performance took place at the Birmingham Music Festival on 23 September 1840. The composer created a hybrid genre here, a formal designation that he took quite literally and which he used here for the first and only time: after the three symphonic movements have flowed one into the other attacca, comes the Lobgesang Cantata in several sections Alles, was Odem hat.
