Elle a probablement des racines très anciennes, on en retrouve des traces dans le culte des dieux antiques. Particulièrement vivace, cette musique, accompagnée d'une danse effrénée, était jouée au cours de cérémonies qui pouvaient durer des journées entières, cérémonies qui avait pour mission de guérir ceux que l'on croyait être victimes de morsure d'une araignée légendaire, la tarentule. Ces cérémonies populaires ont quasiment disparu au milieu du XXème siècle.Des compositeurs comme Gioacchino Rossini ont repris la tarentelle à leur manière. Cette Tarentelle Napolitaine, dite La Danza, a été composée pour un orchestre symphonique et ténor soliste. Mais elle a été reprise et arrangée de nombreuses fois par divers ensembles instrumentaux (ensembles de guitares), et chantés par exemple par des mezzo-soprano. Cette pièce semble tourner et virevolter, et rappelle vraiment une danse envoutante.
