Written in a modern Americana style, A Country Memory begins subtly with a lyrical violin melody over triads and open-string fifths in the other sections of the string orchestra. A pastoral country-feel is established in the introduction and continues throughout the piece. The eightmeasure folk tune at m. 5 in violin I, played legato, is featured in each section of the ensemble. The cello plays the melody in m. 25 and then hands off to the high strings in m. 29.In the interlude at m. 35, violin I states a two-measure melody. The rest of the ensemble joins in harmony two measures later, and the full group builds to the ritard. in m. 42. Low strings carry the melody in m. 43, as violin I plays an ostinato above them. The ensemble builds, playing ascending, scalar melodies and moves to the Maestoso section at m. 53. This is the final grand statement of the main theme before the ending begins at m. 61. From there to the end, the group plays vigorously with a full sound, highlighted by repeated sixteenth-note figures in violin I as the piece soars to the final chord.

A heartfelt piece that is dedicated to the memory of a lost student, the music is both emotional and beautiful. It is meant to depict the life of the person lost, not the sadness. In typical Larry Clark fashion, the piece has memorable melodies, interesting lush harmonies and is well-scored. This will be a great vehicle to improve the musicianship of your students.Heartstrings began its life as the main musical material for a piece I wrote called Forever Climbing. It was a concert band work that was commissioned by the Boulder Creek High School Band under the direction of James O'Haloran. It was dedicated to the memory of Trevor Crouse who died tragically in a climbing accident. When Ifinished that piece, I just knew that I was not finished with the main musical ideas and decided it would work very nicely for strings.Certainly in the face of losing a loved one it would pull on your heartstrings, but when I was composing this piece I also wanted to bring about the love that we have for our close friends and family members. I hope that you will hear love in the piece along with a touch of sadness. Certain harmonic choices and dissonances in the melody to the harmonies were used to bring about this emotional feeling. I take great pride in writing music for young people that stretches their musicianship. When I work with students, I ask them to put their emotions into the music stretch phrasing, push lines, and giving things shape; make the music more than what is on the page. Bring it to life and make the audience feel something with their performance. It is my sincere hope that it will inspire them to do so and expand their musical horizons. I continue to honor the memory of Trevor and the memory of those loved ones I have lost as well.It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2016.

1. Sidestep Reel - In 19th Century America, the Afro-Celtic fiddle style was the centerpiece of many a dance. Reels and hornpipes were very popular forms. Their repetitive, even-metered rhythms were easy and fun to dance to, and their infectious singable melodies stayed in the mind and on the tongue. More adventurous fiddlers were given to syncopating on these forms by accenting off beats and by embellishing melodies with oddmetered note groupings. Syncopation is a fundamental rhythmic attitude of jazz and this movement is a celebration of that art. The melodic language is a home-grown concoction of commonality between traditional reels and hornpipes and the Baroque, Ragtime and the quartal concepts of Modern Jazz. 2. As the Wind Goes - the wistful late night song of a lullabye, a campfire song, a ballad...a spiritual. It is sung as if on the wind, yearning to experience once again that which will only ever again live as memory. 3. Jones’ Jig - the Irish Jig, the African 6/8 bell pattern, the shuffle rhythm of jazz and the drum style of Elvin Jones all play around with the relationship of 3 in the time-space of 2. The juxtaposition, negotiation and reconciliation of these opposing rhythmic perspectives create interesting musical relationships all over the globe. 4. Nicola’s Strathspey - In the traditional Strathspey, improvised embellishments, syncopated dotted rhythms and the use of space between notes create expectation, momentum and surprise. These same elements and their effect on the listener are the same in the blues. It seems like a natural marriage. 5. Bye Bye Breakdown - This is good ol’, Saturday night barn dance, hoedown fiddling. It revels in the whining cry of open double stops, in all types of musical onomatopoeia from train sounds to animal calls to country whistling, and in the steady 2/4 rhythm that is as basic as walking. The harmonic framework of several popular fiddle and folk tunes provide a practical grid for the cutting of challenging melodic and rhythmic figures. It is designed to tire fiddler and dancers out. Then we stomp our way home in varying states of delight and disrepair.Solo Violin Duration: 24' Composed: 2018 Published by: Wynton Marsalis (administered by Skayne's Music).

Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso).Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys.
