Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. Included in the collection are seven short pieces in different keys that date from the early 1860s. Rheinberger wrote these at the request of his teacher Herzog and others for several organ collections of “easy, performable†pieces – and they are rewarding pieces for liturgical use. The works without opus numbers (WoO 10, 37, 56, 70) can no longer be regarded as early works. The Fugue in F minor WoO 10 of 1867, with its tendency to translate counterpoint into expressive chordal writing, already displays many characteristics of the late Rheinberger, the Canzonetta WoO 77 is a late work from autumn 1899, whereas the Romanze WoO 70 is a second version of no. 1 of the Miscellaneen op. 174 in the easier to play key of C major.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

Composed in 2012, these short piano compositions are intended for beginner through intermediate beginner levels. They are written using a variety of harmonic flavors such as modality, diatonicism, and free dissonance. These pieces can be played individually or preferably, as a set. Each work contains a descriptive title depicting a different mood or scene. Jules Mouquet (1867-1946) was a French composer, music professor, and arts advocate. He graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under Xavier Leroux and Théodore Dubois. The majority of his catalogue remains obscure and is rarely heard today. The notable exception is Flûte de Pan, Op. 15 (1906) originally for flute and orchestra and later arranged by Mouquet into a sonata for flute and piano. Cinq Pièces Brèves, Op. 39, or Five Short Pieces are characteristic of Mouquet’s late Romantic Style; all are short in form, chromatic, free flowing and impressionistic.

These six short pieces might more readily be described as fantasies, each with its own sound-world but linked by shared material. The mood of each of these short movements is guided by an imaginary landscape, one shadowed by the blackened tree, a far-away song, shadows past, a quickening moon, forgotten voices, and by the harrowed land. The title of the last movement plays on the word harrow, something that is used to break up the soil, but also bringing with it suggestions of a land both pained and wounded.
