Circus Vignettes is a Brass ensemble piece comprised of several scenes one might have expected to encounter at a circus at the height of their popularity. Each vignette seeks to capture a particular feeling, such as the buzzing excitement of arriving at the Circus in At the Midway, the delicateness of witnessing the Flea Circus, the awesome power of The Strongman, and the breathless tension built up during the world-famous Bed of Nails! Some of the vignettes also explore the less savory aspects of the Circus' past, including the macabre showroom of anatomical oddities housed in jars of formaldehyde known as Pickled Punks, and the desire to draw crowds by any means necessary, often cobbling together real and unique attractions such as the Fiji Mermaid. All of the vignettes require some acrobatic ability of each of the players, and performers will find moments throughout the piece in which to showcase their skill. It is recommended to perform the vignettes as a complete work, however some of the movements stand well on their own if desired.

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fataleâ€), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. String bass parts are provided both for standard orchestral tuning and for solo tuning. In the mid-1940s, film critics in France noticed a trend emerging in movies from the United States, which they coined film noir (which translates to “black filmâ€). These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. Several characteristics are commonly found in many of these movies, including a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who either coerces the male lead into committing murder for her or is a killer herself (a “femme fataleâ€), and a twisting, turning plot line that involves one or more homicides. Additionally, there are several visual elements that these movies share: many are shot in black and white, with great emphasis on the use of shadows and light; alcohol and cigarettes are heavily consumed by men and women alike; and men typically wear trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Examples of film noir include Orson Welles’ The Lady from Shanghai, Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity, and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon.NOIR VIGNETTES for Double Bass and Piano consists of four movements, each depicting a different aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. This piece was commissioned by the University of Illinois Research Board on behalf of double bassist Michael Cameron.-Stacy Garrop.

I teach at the USC /Thornton School of Music and wanted to write a short concert piece for our excellent Scholarshjip Woodwind Quintet. The premier was on campus at the Fisher Museum of Art on March 6, 2015. The musicians were Yoon-hee Jung, Flute, Marissa Honda, Oboe, Edgar David Lopez, Clarinet, Katelyn Benedict, Horn and Jayson Heubusch, Bassoon. Vignettes (as the title implies) is comprised of several small sections in contrasting rhythms. The bassoon starts a fast intro scherzo featuring an exclamatory horn solo which is followed by an odd meter accompaniment under a clarinet solo. That slows down to a haunting 9/8 vignette where the oboe carries the solo. This feel and harmony repeats led by flute solos and is developed by contrapuntal solos in all of the instruments. The third vignette is in a slower 5/8 meter with jazz chords providing the harmonic base while all of the instruments float around the melodies. This also repeats twice in a development section. Finally parts of the fast scherzo return with a rush to a syncopated ending. Lot's of fun!

A programmatic work based on historical events from three centuries of Southern history. These musical vignettes create three moods which vividly represent Charleston 1774, Atlanta 1864, Nashville 1937. Wonderful music that provides an excellent opportunity for collaboration in a multi-discipline teaching setting. VERY EFFECTIVE!

The title Ten Orphic Vignettes, which alludes to Orpheus, is a conceptual metaphor that represents the idea behind this set of pieces. Orpheus the legendary figure from Greek mythology was venerated for being endowed with superhuman musical skills. He was a poet and mystic whose poems set out many philosophical principles and dogmas of Ancient Greece. These pieces were written in 2021 and some of them are derived from compositional sketches from earlier years. The subject matter of these works are quite eclectic, encompassing Joy, death, aesthetic beauty, nostalgia, the mystical and the esoteric. They are designed to be played as solo pieces on their own or in groups chosen by the performer.Organ Duration: 32’ Composed: 2021 Published by: Zimbel Press.

From delightful to lonesome to fiery, this three movement suite invites both performers and listeners to share the joy of being enveloped in richness of tone, creating poignant expressions of the heart. Marvelous recital and concert music. Vignette I: Delightful Dance Jaunty rhythms and clever surprises render a joyful opening section. Later, a warm, love filled melody is poured out by each instrumentalist, and climbs to a glorious tutti. Then it is back to the joyful dance, a few more surprises, and a delightfully happy ending. Vignette II: Lonesome Chaconne opens with two dark chords. Then the piano begins the chaconne with a mournful bass line and plaintive off beats. The viola enters and plays a lonesome melody, then is joined by the cello in a melancholy duet over the chaconne until it dies away. The cello's brief recitative emerges from the depths into an aching cry that is then echoed by the viola. Joining together, they pour out a fervent melody, moving higher and higher until they breakthrough to the light. Alas, the vision fades, and they return to only fragments as the chaconne disappears. Vignette III: Fiery Fugue opens with a feisty subject melody, first in the viola, followed by the cello, piano right hand, and left hand. It is similar in form to a Bach fugue, but uses modal tonality and syncopated rhythms. The statements and episodes build to a recall of the fervent melody from the second movement, leading to the final dynamic unison statement of the fugue subject. Just as it almost dies away, it recharges and boldly bounds ahead to the end. Difficulty Level: 5 (Advanced) Viola, Cello, Piano Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2016 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC See composer website for audio sample.

Riversong was originally composed for solo vibraphone and was presented in lead sheet format (for an improvising musician's use) and in a completely written-out version. Spelled here for piano, the original flow and lure of a river's pull is augmented by two additional vignettes - Water Catcher and Terra Firma - that depict both an unexpected outing and the satisfaction of a completed trip. Spelled here for piano, the original flow and lure of a river's pull is augmented by two additional vignettes that depict both an unexpected outing and the satisfaction of a completed trip. Water Catcher reminds us of what may lie around the next bend when storms follow the river and powerfully replace calm with chaos. Terra Firma confirms our respect and desire for the journey - natural repose and quiescence in harmony with anticipation of revisiting the river's song.

From internationally-celebrated composer Pablo Sosa comes this captivating 2-disc recording of original songs inspired by this unique metaphor. Sosa writes, “When heaven is at the same height as a table (that is, within our grasp), it creates encounter. This encounter becomes feast, friendship, altar and nourishment, as well as refuge, inclusion and justice for all.†The songs on this album explore aspects of this encounter with elegance, tenderness, passion and exuberance. Be transported through an odyssey of musical vignettes that feel at once classic and timeless, universal in their embrace while unabashedly Argentinian. Flamenco, tango, jazz, and samba all infuse these songs’ underlying flare for story-telling—in this case, the story of our faith and the church.
