There were wild oatsAnd the soil was blackBut sparkledWhen the sun was outThe air sharp in the nostrilsHard to defineSomewhere between knife and coal andAcid and that special light and sweetWhiteness thornbushes exhaleIt was nothing specialBecause everything was special...Thus the opening line of the poem TERRAINS VAGUES by Klaus Rifbjerg, the Danish Poet. I chose to adopt this title for my orchestral work, because of its closeness in associations: an indeterminable, often polarized, state of rhythmic and tonal ambiguity. The expression seems created by the Franch author, Victor Hugo:And here lies the fascination: in the kinds of terrains vagues, which are simultaniously bizarre and ugly, as if created by two alien species of nature. To watch the suburb is like observing and amphibium: trees vanish, roofs appear, grass vanish, cobble stones appear, ploughing fields vanish, shops appear, beaten tracks vanish - passions appear; the murmur of Nature Divine ends, the noise of Mankind takes over. (Victor Hugo)Still, the atmosphere as well as the material of TERRAINS VAGUES have its origin, in my SYMPHONY NO. 6 (1999), the last minute of which, cut up rough, appears as the start of my new work. The music of TERRAINS VAGUES subdivides itself, without breaks, into three sections, or shades:I: TERRAINS - II: VAGUES (Waves) III: TERRAINS VAGUES.Per Norgard, March 2001.

Badlands occur throughout the world, and are represented by dramatic terrain created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.Badlands occur throughout the world, but many of the most striking are in Canada and the United States. This dramatic terrain is created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. The regions known as badlands are frequently difficult to impossible to navigate on foot and are often considered to be sacred lands by cultures that live in these regions. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles. Additionally, I hope that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.Peter Terry, 2018.

Simon Holt 's 3rd Quartet is the third of six pieces which make up a cycle with the overall title 'Terrain'. Lasting around 23 minutes, this wonderful work is arranged for String Quartet and was co-commissioned by The Radcliffe Trust, NMC Recordings, Internationales Musikfestival Heidelberger Fruhling and Wigmore Hall. The premiere was performed on 19th January 2015. The six different compositions, of which 3rd Quartet is the third, are for different combinations of stringed instruments, featuring Piano in the second piece. The music that comprises 3rd Quartet is drawn from the other parts of the cycle as a whole, yet in a reverse order. In this way the piecedevelops what has come before, foreshadows what's to come, all the while encompassing the entire cycle in a single piece.

The stands are packed, two world-class teams are on the field, the smell of hotdogs fills the air and fans chant and scream. All of these contribute to create stadium fever. The composer has conveyed these elements in the composition including the aspect integral to the fever: an atmosphere full of excitement.

Atypical among William Grant Still’s works, DISMAL SWAMP combines eerie effects and mysterious chromaticism in dramatic mixture with his more vernacular American elements to portray The Great Dismal Swamp. This swampland served as a temporary safe haven for runaway slaves en route to the North, as bounty hunters were unlikely to brave the dangerous terrain and wildlife in search of runaways. Composed in 1937, DISMAL SWAMP is scored for standard orchestra with a prominent piano part. This fascinating 13-minute work is within reach of all levels of orchestras, and a valuable addition to symphonic programming.

BACH-SHARDS was commissioned by the Brentano String Quartet as part of their Art of the Fugue companion-piece project. Ran deliberately stays within the realm of Bach-like vocabulary, altering syntax in ways that add up to something slightly different from the anticipated sum of the parts. The work builds up to a climax that makes the entry point into Bach’s Contrapunctus X seem thoroughly natural. While composing Bach-Shards I found myself gravitating, intuitively and gradually, toward a dual goal. First, though the tension and dissonance inherent in certain moments of Bach’s own maze-like contrapuntal structures could quite easily and naturally lead one into a pungent contemporary terrain, I opted not to stray outside the realm of Bach-like materials and harmonic language. Instead, it was my hope to alter their relationships and context in ways that add up to a something that’s slightly different than the anticipated sum of the parts. A mildly deconstructed Bach, if you will. The other important challenge I set for myself was building up the latter, toccata-like portion of Bach-Shards in a way that would make the entry point of the fugue which it precedes, Contrapunctus X, seem thoroughly natural. It was my intent to have the first fugal entrance feel like a huge and much welcome release of the energy created by my Prelude’s penultimate stretch, with its bravura figurations elaborating on an insistent dominant pedal point.

Under the Sun's Gaze as a title for a musical composition conjures up many possibilities. It is, in fact, an imagined line from an unwritten poem, invented with the idea of capturing something of the visual aura the sounds and energy of this work invoke in its composer' mind. An omnipotent presence in all of nature, a source of life yet also capable of its destruction, the sun affects the light and dark in our physical existence as it defines the daily and seasonal life. The music of this work, in three interlocking parts, takes turns being exuberant, caressing, scorching, receding, hazy, lazy, blazing, dissolving into darkness, blinding in its intensity. Subtitled Concerto da Camera III, this work is written for what has become known as the standard Pierrot instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano plus percussion. The difference here is that the winds are doubled - the two flutists alternating with piccolo and alto flute and both clarinetists also doubling on bass clarinets. The ninth member of the ensemble, a soprano saxophone, appears well into the piece, its lyrical, plaintively expressive quality dominating the musical terrain for a while. While occasionally joining the others for some tutti outbursts, it maintains its position as something of a guest throughout. Of the various thematic ideas that populate this work, a six-note descending line played by the clarinet appearing right at the work's opening then arching back up reveals itself, as the music unfolds, to be the principal melodic building block of Under the Sun's Gaze. Its various transformations include the plaintive soprano saxophone melody appearing in the middle section. Just under 20 minutes in length, the work in its totality can be heard as being in a loose arch form, its ending receding into a distant darkening horizon which carries in it the seed of the new dawn that lies beyond. Under the Sun's Gaze was commissioned by the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress for the San Francisco Contemporary Players, David Milnes, conductor.
