Nicolò Paganini's trios for strings and guitar make up a small but significant group of pieces consisting of five works of different lengths, formal structure and difficulty: the Serenata in F major M.S. 115, the Terzetto in A minor M.S. 116, the Serenata in C major M.S. 17, the Terzetto concertante in D major M.S. 114, and the Terzetto in D major M.S. 69. Within this group, the Terzetto M.S. 116 and the Serenata M.S. 116 make up a small diptych for two violins and guitar that can be traced back to Paganini's juvenile period (1796-1804). In addition to using the same musical formation, the two pieces also share some compositional features, regarding general formal characteristics as well as the order and the number of movements. Despite their simplicity, the two compositions still have features typical of Paganini's writing from this period such as their spontaneous cantabilità , the freshness of their musical ideas, pleasant (if perhaps a little naive), and the well-defined sense of form that comes out in these small compositions.

Dvorák composed his Terzetto op. 74 in 1887 as the result of a spontaneous desire to write some domestic music. Inspired by neighborhood violin lessons, he wrote these four little movements for two violins with viola accompaniment in the space of just a few days. This Terzetto is thus not technically difficult to play, though with its flowing melodies and spirited rhythms it still offers the best of Dvorák. It is not surprising that his publisher Fritz Simrock immediately snatched them up when Dvorák told him in 1887 that he was working on little bagatelles. The autograph of the score that contained many corrections nevertheless makes evident just how much hard work went into these little bagatelles. It also served as the engraver’s copy for the first edition. Both these sources were consulted for this Urtext edition that offers today's players an authentic text of this musical jewel.

Schon bei Ravel, Gershwin oder Strawinsky findet man die Verbindung des schwermutigen Blues-Charakter mit dem melodischen und klanglichen Duktus der Kunstmusik. Wittrichs 'Choral-Blues' spielt mit jazz-typischen Harmoniefolgen (changes), triolisch gepragtem Groove mit charakteristischen Bordun-Stutzen und einer 'Lamento'-Grundstimmung, die sich melodisch in chromatisch fallenden Linien aussert. Das stereotype 12-taktige Blues-Schema bleibt dabei ausgeklammert. Ein wertvoller Beitrag zur Erweiterung des Orgelrepertoires, das sich seit einigen Jahrzehnten auch fur populare Musikformen aus Rock, Pop und Jazz in den Kirchenraumen geoffnet hat.
