At the international LISTENING/HEARING symposium in autumn 2021 in Bonn, international experts discussed the elementary sense of hearing and the cultural technique of listening. Philosophy meets cognitive research, soundscape ecology meets musicology, architectural theory meets media analysis, history meets sociology. And everything on the sound art, which absorbs, processes and externalizes scientific findings and often throws back new questions. With contributions by Sam Auinger, Barry Blesser, Gernot Bohme, Jonathan Clarke, Stefan Evers, Edwin van der Heide, Anne Holzmuller Sandra Muller, Sven Oliver Muller, Bernhard Leitner, Gordon Monahan, Helga de la Motte-Haber, Jonas Obleser, Andreas Oldorp, Jens Gerrit Papenburg, Lucia Ronchetti, Hartmut Rosa, Linda-Ruth Salter, Holger Schulze, Maia Urstad and Jonathan Sterne.

This work owes its inception to Delius' friend Percy Granger, who approached Delius for 'some piece for not too big Orchestra...and not too wildly difficult'. This work is the result of this request, and is scored here for PianoSolo.

Bud Woodruff presents The Cat Is in the Kitchen, a tongue-in-cheek style piece with jazz influences that students enjoy playing. This quirky piece is designed to help students successfully navigate playing F-naturals and B-flats. Bud Woodruff draws on his lengthy career as a string educator to help students overcome the challenges in this piece.
I wrote The Cat Is in the Kitchen for a group of very talented young players who, for some reason, did not like Bb's, and particularly Bb's on the G string ... especially the cellos (who always faithfully played them as B naturals). They bore no great love for F naturals, either. So this piece is full of both. Since the students liked the sound of the piece, they overcame their dislikes, and all was just fine in the end ... mission accomplished!
One will find that changing the bowings will change the accents, too, and the flavor of the piece will be lost. Without a doubt, there is a jazz influence, and the piece will be easier to teach if you approach it from that angle. Have the class work on m. 18 until everyone can play it ease. Then add m. 19 for the upper strings, and 90% of any issues the bowings may present will be solved.
My kids loved playing this piece, and the audience enjoyed hearing it. I trust you will have the same results.

When I found Born on a Fishing Boat in an issue of Poetry While You Wait in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I was immediately struck by Ms. Lius simple, evocative words. While I sat in the cafe on a cold January day waiting for my coffee, I closed my eyes and envisioned what it might be like to lie on my back in a small fishing boat and look up at the stars. I stole the free booklet of poetry and trudged home in the snow, already hearing the piano part in my mind. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about Mei-Li Lius life and work to purchase her book Ten Thousand Miles from Home, published by Dragon Press (ISBN: 9780976137009). I sincerely hope I have honored her art with this setting. A heartfelt memorial to the composer’s sister, SAMBA FOR SUSAN bears a tempo marking of “Sensual,†and this 5-minute elegy is set as a slow bossa nova, full of the jazz flavor and syncopations of samba tradition. In the hands of this celebrated opera and theater composer, Gordon’s samba is a drama cast in a dance feel. Themes alternate, always returning transformed into fresh textures at each recurrence, creating a work that is catchy on first hearing, and reveals its depth upon repeated hearings.

To benefit Chorus America, Stucky allowed himself to be auctioned off as a prize - the high bidder would receive a new work from the composer. After a few years and not really hearing anything, Stucky suddenly found himself up against a deadline. He reached back to a favorite poem by A.R. Ammons, Eyesight, which, he says, Won't let...his reader rest till the very last word...one of those sudden insights that leave us breathless..This piece has an odd history. A few years ago, I agreed to be one of the“prizes†in an auction to benefit Chorus America: the highest bidder wouldget a new piece from me, while their money went to the organization. Thewinning bid came from a collection of several professional choruses anddirectors. But I was always a little vague about the details, and, hearingnothing more about it for a few years, forgot the whole thing. One day I received a message from Thomas Edward Morgan, directorof the Ars Nova Chamber Singers in Boulder: they had scheduled thepremiere of my new piece for a few weeks later, and could they have themusic, please? I needed a text, quickly, and (as usual) I was in a Los Angeleshotel room, not at home with my books. So I turned to the internet andsoon tracked down my favorite poet, A.R. Ammons (1926-2001).Once I stumbled on “Eyesight,†I remembered having loved the poemyears before. Archie must have loved it, too, because he included it bothin his Collected Poems 1951-1971 and in the later Selected Poems. It haseverything you want in an Archie Ammons poem: what Edward Hirschcalled his “offbeat, sideways, unpredictable radiance,†his “homespunglory.†It has one of his trademark conversations with a mountain (perhapsfrom his native North Carolina), it has the fluid motion from one line tothe next (enjambment, if you want to get technical) that won’t let him orhis reader rest till the very last word of the very last line, and it has in thatlast line one of those sudden insights that leave us breathless: “some thingsthat go are gone.â€I miss Archie, but he’s not gone. I’m grateful for the wonderful poems heleft us, and I’m grateful that he was always generous and kind when I hadthe chutzpah to add my music to his.

A Basque Carol (also known as Gabriel's Message) holds a special place in Western music. The carol originates from Basque country around the 13th century, based on the Latin hymn, Angelus ad Virginem (likely of Franciscan origin). The tune quickly spread throughout Europe, finding popularity in Britain where it was even referenced in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: Playing so sweetly that the chamber rang; / and Angelus ad virginem he sang. . .. Interestingly, the melody we know and love today is derived from the original Basque version. In my view, this tune is a perfect example of melody-crafting. It is at once hauntingly beautiful, yet warm and joyous. Its contours are complex, dramatic, yet singable. I believe this melodic accessibility is the key to the song's lasting popularity. I would also attribute A Basque Carol's continued popularity to its elegant translation into English (by Sabine Baring-Gould, who rediscovered the original Basque tune). Translations often risk sounding unimaginative, coarse, and blunt. This translation is strikingly different. It was graced with an especially poetic translation including lines such as his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame. I am very excited to offer a new perspective on this classic carol, joining the tradition of composers preserving and reimagining a priceless medieval melody. My first goal was to create a flowing, richly-textured, even cinematic string accompaniment for the choir. This approach was very much inspired by the dense, string-writing style of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. My second goal was to make the arrangement flexible enough to be performed with only choir, only strings, or (best of all) both ensembles combined. To further complement this approach, I've added an obligato line for a solo recorder (solo flute or violin work just as well). If you listen carefully, you will hear a quote from my other favorite holiday carol, Jesu Bambino. I hope you enjoy performing A Basque Carol. I especially hope that you sense the ancient magic cast into this tune, hearing the ineffable qualities that have compelled us to sustain it for nearly a millennium. Whether you're a choir, a string orchestra, or a combined ensemble, this arrangement of A Basque Carol will surely be a haunting and lovely addition to your next holiday program!.A Basque Carol (also known as Gabriel’s Message) holds a special place in Western music. Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. He was extremely prolific, with numerous songs that have lasted to this day. I first had the idea to arrange Beautiful Dreamer for SATB choirs a cappella, after hearing Kristen Chenoweth in concert. She ended her concert, in a 1,600 seat hall, with Beautiful Dreamer, an a cappella solo, with no microphone. Given the beautiful melody, text and Ms. Chenoweth's voice, one could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Her performance concluded to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The power of music. Throughout this arrangement, the harmonies support the beautiful melody and text (rather than get in its' way). Opportunities abound for vocal parts to be showcased as well as an optional solo/duet at the beginning. Sing freely, with pure vowels, crisp diction and sensitivity, allowing the text to prevail by giving special attention to stressed and unstressed syllables and words. I hope you enjoy singing this arrangement in rehearsal and performance to the delight of your audience. Searching for Destiny's Diamond is a mysterious work that centers around the idea of young people searching out their destiny during dark times. It involves intrigue and tension, as they journey towards their purpose and the diamond that is their bright future. Every instrument in the orchestra begins with the melody and plays it throughout the piece, making this work an excellent teaching piece since all parts can be learned at the same time. The second half of the work is a musical stretto with the melodic figure offset by one measure in Violin II, Viola and Bass. This makes for some intriguing harmonies that will increase the student's hearing ability and bring tension to the piece. While this piece can be performed without piano, it is desired that the piano be played in performance, as it adds intrigue to the sound. The piano part has been written so that it can be performed by developing pianists. To facilitate performances when no player is available, a recorded piano part is available at www.carlfischer.com/FAS121.Searching for Destiny’s Diamond is a mysterious work that centers around the idea of young people searching out their destiny during dark times. The Sonata is one of Erkin's works which the casual listener may fail to attribute to a particular geography at a first hearing. He will however become absorbed by a unique sense of identity, surprising harmonies and rhythms which integrate with such sincerity and authenticity in the flowof the music. At a more attentive hearing, one can discover features of ancient Anatolian music which Erkin always transforms with extraordinary inspiration, enfolding audiences unfamiliar with this culture in a music which is often profoundly spiritual with an admirably woven polyphonic texture in which not one bar seems superfluous or out of place. The first movement Allegro is woven from two contrasting themes. The first is a vigorous progression in the middle register with contrapuntal elements quasi as counterpoint. A luminous second theme evoking folk tunes connects back to the first theme and the movement ends in a brisk tone.In the second movement Adagio molto sostenuto a profound, introspective first theme is developed in variations of exquisite lyricism. The imposing middle section which forms a rondo suggests latent unrest.Imbued with energy and determination, the final Allegro consists of abstracted elements of Anatolian folk music bearing the creative stamp of Erkin. The movement ends with an impressive crescendo.

About the Work In the spring of 2008 a large number of wildfires plagued the west coast, including the area where my wife and I lived in northern California. Firefighters all along the West Coast worked overtime in what seemed like an endless battle to protect residents and their homes. After hearing of a number of firefighters who had lost their lives in the struggle, I composed this work as a dedication to them, in honor of their sacrifice. It is not dedicated to any one person or group, or even just to the west-coast firefighters who battled those horrible wildfires; instead, to all firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. Although designed as a standalone work, I highly recommend following this composition with one of the many fine band settings of Amazing Grace, as it is commonly performed at firefighter memorials. The one by Frank Ticheli is superb, and if you have access to a good piper there is an excellent version by Jay Dawson which features a solo verse for bagpipe; both are quite stirring. Performance Notes The sustained slower tempo may prove a challenge for some groups; as always, emphasize subdivision. Cues should be used only if necessary due to limited instrumentation. The clarinet and cup-muted trumpets at m. 39 should be very sostenuto (almost organ-like); be careful to stagger breathe. The tempo change at m. 55 should not be much of a challenge, but many groups may tend to slow back down to the original tempo by m. 59; the timpani player can greatly assist in avoiding this problem. The coda at m. 82 may be taken more slowly than the indicated tempo if your solo flutist can manage the lengthy sustained notes.About the WorkIn the spring of 2008 a large number of wildfires plagued the west coast, including the area where my wife and I lived in northern California.
