The third and final volume devoted to the anthems of S. S. Wesley completes the canon with 23 original works written in the period between his departure from Exeter Cathedral to become organist of Leeds parish church in 1842 and 1874, the likely date of his final essays in the genre. Moving towards a greater simplicity of style, with less counterpoint and dissonance, but emphasising elements of colour, timbre and texture, these works are in general conceived on a more modest scale than earlier pieces such as The Wilderness. Even so, they show the composer continuing to experiment with the Anglican verse anthem, the evolution of which had been the cornerstone of a creative achievement without equal in the history of the English cathedral tradition between Purcell and Stanford.

This volume continues the reordering of the Society's edition of Purcell's anthems, under which all the large-scale verse anthems with strings will be found in Volumes 13 (in preparation) and 14 and 17 (already published); all the verse anthems with organ in Volumes 28 (in preparation) and 29; and the stile antico anthems and the Latin motets in Volume 32 (in preparation). All eleven pieces in the present volume were probably composed for the Chapel Royal, and all appear to belong to Purcell's later years. Four of them are explicitly dated - the earliest 1687 - in an authoritative source which was not available to previous editors of the music: a score-book in the hand of the celebrated bass singer John Gostling, whose cavernous low register Purcell exploited for its dramatic effect in some of his finest compositions for the Chapel.

Tallis's choral works with English texts were all written for the worship of God in the reformed Church of England, setting either the liturgy of the new Book of Common Prayer of 1549, or Coverdale's vernacular bible. They testify to his position, undisputed even in his lifetime, as 'the father of English church music'. This volume contains ten of the 11 anthems that can definitely be attributed to the composer, and five contrafacta anthems with Latin texts, which were published in Tallis and Byrd's Cantiones Sacrae of 1575.
