Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996) was one of the post-war Finnish composers who sought to distance himself from the legacy of Sibelius. The cycle Sub rosa - settings of poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1973) - is now being published for the first time. The poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1921-1995) are from her collection Orfiset laulut (Orphic Songs) published in 1960 drawing on ancient mythology, oriental philosophy and mysticism in her own inimitable, unadorned manner. Poet and composer shake hands in this song cycle: the same landscape looks different depending on the lighting and season. The music represents the sparse, economical Kokkonen at his best; he uses an embryonic motif in a variety of ways and forms. Sub rosa was premiered by Helja Angervo, mezzo-soprano and Izumi Tateno, piano on March 25, 1973. The overall duration is c. 10 minutes.

The composer, whose family was severely affected by the Second World War and the Holocaust, considers his Anne Frank Suite as a “personal memorial diary and a reminder in view of the futility of warâ€. The score is prefaced by a quotation from Anne Frank: “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heartâ€, which has impressed the composer since his youth. His three-movement suite attempts to musically reflect the emotionality and thoughtfulness of the theme, which eludes all words. The piano is treated in a classical manner and creates the emotional space for the solo cello. Playing in a high register in a cantabilestyle over long passages, the cello also astounds with sound effects, harmonics and an expressive solo cadenza in the middle of the work.

Philip Brink has spent his entire career building the knowledge to assemble this major book on the pedagogy of the Trombone. Below are his words to describe what the book entails. Trombonist's Toolkit was conceived as exactly that: a resource for troubleshooting one's playing, for working out problems, for advancing one's playing skills. It is NOT a method in the traditional sense - no weekly lessons, no planned schedule for arriving at a certain point after a year, two years, etc. The player [you, the reader] can search the topic list for specific problems in need of solution. Most of the topics are organized by general subject areas: air, embouchure, range building, etc. The source for most of what I write is my own personal experience as student, teacher, freelancer and orchestral performer. I owe a great debt of gratitude to teachers, mentors, colleagues and students past and present, for listening to my playing, trying out my concepts, putting up with my questions and so forth. Some of those people are present, some are far away, and sadly, some are no longer living. To all of them I say Thank you, and I hope those of you who read this can recognize what you told me!
