Hob XXI:3. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Joseph Haydn's oratorio 'The Seasons' was composed directly after the first successful performances of 'The Creation'. 'The Seasons' has been greatly overshadowed by 'The Creation' for a long time and yet this work has far greater changes of style between popular Singspiel and great oratorio than 'The Creation'. 'The Seasons' continues to impress and remains part of the core repertoire to the present with its overwhelming richness of musical character and its immense formal variety. Firstly this setting of the Mass provides pointers to the situation of Austrian church music as it had been affected by imperial decrees. Secondly the political situation, with the imminent invasion of Austria by Napoleon's troops, had reached a crisis point which is reflected in the description of this composition as a 'Mass in time of war'.
