A time-honored poem brings the promise of spring into an insightful message of faith in this artfully composed anthem. With classic purity, the song emerges out of a delicate pattern from the piano. The choral writing uses unison and two-part textures mingled with fuller sounds for both clarity and power. Changes in tempo and a wide dynamic vocabulary invite choirs to linger on each precious phrase, sharing the abundant life that is ours through grace. The text is from The Book of Common Prayer, the music is original. A melismatic chant-like opening builds steadily to a dramatic declamation of the text Therefore let us keep the feast. Then the chant line continues softly in the accompaniment as the final alleluias are sung. The organ accompaniment is quite sufficient but can be augmented with Brass Quintet. From Mass of the Resurrection (ECS 8325).

The words are based on the Easter Gospel, the account of the Resurrection of Jesus, which is first joyfully celebrated. Then follows a call to the faithful: every Christian must make the Resurrection a reason to renew himself spiritually, so as to complete a kind of inner Resurrection himself. For his scoring - which changed slightly from performance to performance - Bach called upon a five-part choir, three trumpets and timpani, three oboes, taille and bassoon, strings and basso continuo. Score available separately - see item CA.3103100.

Resurrexi is based entirely upon Gregorian chant alternating between pure chant and polyphonic choral settings in which the chant is used freely. The work is divided into four sections which describe the appearance of the Angel of the Resurrection, and three post-Resurrection appearances of Christ. Each section concludes with a motet which serves as a summation of what has gone before. The music of the opening Alleluia returns in the final chorus, where it is transformed modally and combined with the beautiful ancient chant, Veni, Creator Spiritus..

Someone asked Mr. Walters, Why write an Easter cantata that's completely focused on the resurrection experience? He replied, Simple. I just thought it was time. After a week of music dedicated to the persecution, death and apparent failure that immediately preceded the resurrection, how much time is left, then, for us to celebrate the gift Jesus gave us? And so generously and completely? Here, then, is his talented response: a glorious compendium of anthems celebrating and rejoicing in the victory of the cross and the beginning, once again, of personal renewal.
