Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people.

“Toccata and Lament†was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral, Rochester, NY, USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure – a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents – already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder, a composer and professor of music theory, has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction, universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters. The heart of the piece is a dirge which, using the Baroque doctrine of the affections, relates to Eastern European cultural history in and around Vilnius, a history marked by the predations of 20th-Century war.

Žibuoklė Martinaitytė's Sielunmaisema (2019) for cello and string orchestra contemplates the cycle of the year in its movements, which are named Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Sielunmaisema translated from Finnish means a “soul-landscape, a particular place that a person carries deep in the heart and returns to often in memory. It can be described as a landscape that “hits you in the center of your chest, the one you that immediately feels like home. The composer tells: Soul-landscape is related to questions of identity and place which resonate with two parallel cultural identities that I carry within - my native Lithuanian and later acquired American. My physical home keeps changing and the only thing that remains is music. In this case, the piece itself becomes an ideal soul-landscape reflecting a native environment as seen through the prism of four seasons. BBC Music Magazine (7/2022) praises the CD with Sielunmaisema: Her scores similarly appeal to something beyond the immeadately cerebral, creating a vast shimmering landscapes that lead the mind somewhere dream-like and seem to speak directly to the body’s senses in arresting and unexpected ways. This product includes the solo cello part and the study score (A4 sized). Duration: 32-34' Orchestration (minimum): 6 Violins I 6 Violins II 4 Violas 4 Violoncellos 1 Double bass The performance material is available for hire from the publisher.

Village Gossip is the first movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's cycle 'Five Choruses For Male Voice'.
The cycle of five choruses is set toLithuanian folk texts translated by Frantisek Ladislav Celakovsky and is written for unaccompanied male choir (TTBB Voices). The title page of the autograph score bears the note: Composed on the journey from Prague to Vienna,12thof December 1878.
The individual parts of the cycle present a vibrant palette of moods, from the balladic 'Dwellers by the Sea' to the final, light-hearted 'The Sparrow's Feast'. The songs' melodies echothe spirit of folk songs, and the composer used simple but colourful harmonies and chose a strophic form.
