This unique collection of Indian character pieces reveals a genre that has been neglected for many years, with much of the music having been out of print since the 1920's. Musically, the pieces are appealing to play and are a fascinating reflection of social and political issues our nation was facing at the turn of the 20th century. Contains detailed historical notes on this nearly forgotten aspect of American classical music, along with supplementary fingerings and practice suggestions added throughout by editor Stephanie Bruning, professor at Morgan State University, who is both a celebrated piano performer and expert in piano pedagogy.

The Sonatas de Paris are divided into two books. Comellas began the series in early 1952 and they were finished in 1955. As with most of his works, he composed without having a plan to premier them or a commission. So upon having them completed, he filed them away. On many occasions, his close friend Jordi Giro would read thrue the pieces or Anna Ricci would sing his songs, but very little of his music was performed during his life time. The two books entitled Sonatas de Paris are really to books with totally different character. The first book is made up of short piano pieces in a neo baroque style. More than following strict forms of the baroque suite, the pieces are more a evoking of the baroque style. Book one loosely follows the idea of a suite or ordre, where as book two is much freer in structure being made up of various pieces, a few in memory of his favored composers (Albeniz, Debussy, and Granados) ending with a group of four dances, Las indias danzantes [Dances of the Indian girls], that refer to an Indian dance. This group of dances is not really playable by one pianist and seems to be really meant to be performed piano 4 hands, but since there is no note about this in the score it is hard to say. A few of these pieces were performed by Rosa Sabater in Paris in 1980.The present edition is based on manuscripts that are in the Joan Comellas deposit in the National Catalonian Library in Barcelona.

For Percussion duo (not the concerto of the same title).
What determines the special character of a piece of music written for percussion instruments is the very choice of sets of instruments. InUdacrepAkubrad, I have chosen a similar set of instruments for each of the players: a marimba, two Darbuka, and a tom-tom. This piece draws its inspiration from the “Eastern†music, extending the boundaries of theregion as faras the Indian sub-continent. The main source materials in this piece are scales and the rhythms emanating from the traditional classical music of the peoples of the Mediterranean; and repetitive minimalism, from themusictradition of the Middle East, as well as the recently developed techniques in western music. — Avner Dorman

With a blend of Celtic and American fiddle tunes, the medley Emerald Melodies begins with Star of the County Down in a moderate 3/4 and intensifies with two Irish jigs: Another Jig Will Do and Coleraine, in multiple compound meters. Melodies are passed throughout every section while still having rhythmically interesting accompaniment parts. The last section brings it all home in the friendly fiddle key of D Major with Lost Indian, an American bluegrass standard. With a blend of Celtic and American fiddle tunes, the medley Emerald Melodies begins with “Star of the County Down†in a moderate 3/4 and intensifies with two Irish jigs: “Another Jig Will Do†and “Coleraine,†in multiple compound meters. The one-movement, yet multiple time structured, sonata uses a gently modern tonal language and has been influenced by the French tradition. Emile Naoumoff likes to give his movements unusual headings that perfectly describe the character of the respective section. The piece for the combination of viola and piano, which is quite rare in concert life, is a valuable and fascinating addition to the repertoire in which both instruments conduct a dialogue on an equal basis.Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of 8, he began his career as a pianist and composer; for ten years, he was a pupil of Nadia Boulanger until her death. At the age of 10, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. Many prizes, awards and appearances as a celebrated pianist followed. Today Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University in Bloomington. He holds master classes in the USA, Europe and Japan and is director of a music academy.

This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Québec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest, followed by a pastoral melody, principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.
