Chamber opera in a prologue and one act. A ghost story telling of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Hebrides. This is a mystery story in the form of a chamber opera. The prologue is set as a court of enquiry into the unexplained disappearance of the three keepers from a lighthouse. Questions are posed by a solo horn, which may sound from among the audience, and three officers give answer. Gradually, they move from straight testimony into fantastical imaginings of evil during a 'flashback' to the lighthouse; but then we snap back to the courtroom. In the main act the three singers become the vanished keepers. They have been together for months, long enough to be fully aware of each other's weaknesses; petty bickerings suggest a relationship which is stable, but liable to become highly unstable at any moment. They sing songs to reduce the tension, Blazes beginning with a rough ballad of street violence, accompanied by violin and banjo. Sandy's song, with cello and out-of-tune upright piano, is a thinly disguised description of sexual bliss, and Arthur's with brass and clarinet, is a tub-thumping hymn. But the songs serve only to resurrect in their minds ghosts from the past, and as the fog descends each of the keepers becomes convinced that he is being claimed by the Beast. They prepare to meet its dazzling eyes, which become the lights of the relief vessel, and the three men reappear as officers, met at the lighthouse only by an infestation of rats. They leave, and at the end the last hours of Blazes, Sandy and Arthur begin to play over again. Libretto only. Duration c. 1h 25mins.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. For soprano solo and SATB choir, this movement begins with the choir on the English text by Phineas Fletcher (1633). A 32-measure soprano solo follows, which covers the majority of the English text. The soloist then begins the ââ¬ÅRecordare,ââ¬Â a calm, descending melodic line with the choir singing the opening ââ¬ÅDrop, dropââ¬Â motif as accompaniment. The choir then concludes with the slow, descending lines ââ¬ÅJesu pie, Jesu pie.ââ¬Â Duration 4:04.

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and drive of the tuneful music is palpable. Its abundantly clear why the title Seatbelts Fastened! was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight!

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and “drive†of the tuneful music is palpable. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight! A Vision of the First Light was commissioned by the Kitami Wind Ensemble, as a commemorative work for their 30th Anniversary. Satoshi Yagisawa composed this piece to conjure “Illusion seen through the dawn†of Hokkaido. The work starts with a quiet and beautiful introduction describing the landscape. The music is rising towards a festive, celebrating fanfare, before a deep tranquility descends, towards the end, creating a moment of reflection. A Vision of the First Light werd geschreven in opdracht van het Kitami Wind Ensemble, ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest. Satoshi Yagisawa componeerde het werk op basis van ‘beelden gezien bij het ochtendgloren’ van Hokkaido. De compositie opent met een mooie, rustige beschrijving van het landschap. De muziek bouwt dan op naar een briljante, feestelijke fanfare, waarna ze tegen het slot weer tot rust komt in een moment van reflectie.A Vision of the First Light wurde vom Kitami Wind Ensemble aus Anlass seines 30-jährigen Bestehens in Auftrag gegeben. Satoshi Yagisawa komponierte das Stück, um eine Illusion von Hokkaido in der Morgendämmerung“ zu erwecken. As The Last Light Fades is a programmatic work, capturing the gradual shift when the sunset gives way to a brief moment of twilight, and the stars begin to take their place in the heavens waiting for darkness to blanket the sky. As the sun starts to descend beyond the horizon, a light rainfall plays percussively on the leaves hanging above. The music conveys the feeling of peace and tranquility that one can only really experience in nature, an ethereal and almost transcendent connection, undisturbed by the disruptions of the modern world.

Although he was born in Split, Croatia, of Belgian descent, Franz von Suppé’s nationality is defined less by his actual descendents than by the country and city where he lived and worked and had the great majority of his success, the Austrian capital, Vienna. It was here where, with assistance from the Johan Strausses and Franz Lehar, he helped to assure Vienna’s reputation as the operetta capital of the world. He achieved this by pioneering operetta as a major medium for the theatre. The overture to Light Cavalry is one of his two most famous works, the other being the Poet and Peasant Overture written as incidental music for a play of the same name.

“My violin concerto would never have been written if I had not met Isabelle Faust. At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just asimportant was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction. The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. An expression that, more than in my previous music, is 'About Light and Lightness.' - Rune Glerup, 2021†Instrumentation: vn; 2(pic).2.3(Ebcl).2/4.3.2(btbn).0/pf/str.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. This movement has no soprano part, it is soloist above and ATB below, giving a rich, dark quality to the music. The tenors and basses (divisi) begin this movement, declaiming “Dies irae, dies illa.†Two soloists begin in the “Flanders fields†text above. There is an option for three soloists as the piece evolves. (Soprano, tenor and baritone, the composer gives some options for this.) Soon the choir takes up the poem, yet the Latin text occasionally appears and continues, moving toward a climax on the text “We are the Dead, Short days ago We lived.†As the music descends from the high point, the English poem continues, with the choir very softly commenting “Dies irae†as the movement ends. Duration 5:36.

Composer's Notes When I met Kelsey Rose in Oxford in St. Stephen’s House chapel over the summer of 2017, we had both just attended a very moving candlelit concert by Westminster Williamson Voices, featuring my setting of “Tenebrae lumini.†I was delighted to be asked to write a piece for compline in Princeton University Chapel, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Anglican/Episcopal chaplaincy at Princeton University. “Aurora†is the result of that meeting. Composing by commission often throws up some interesting challenges. The piece had to fit both as an accompanying piece to the plainchant of compline, whilst simultaneously being a celebratory anthem. I was instantly drawn back to the poetry and hymns of St. Ambrose of Milan, particularly “Aurora iam spargit polum.†Fragments of chant (both real and imagined) are used to create the powerful imagery of the descending golden light of dawn. The piece reaches its climax with the plea for the despair of night to “vanish,†which it then does, leaving the sopranos alone on a high G.

Named for the West Wind, this Grade 3 original work makes use of quarter and eighth note triplets to depict a sense of swirling motion. A forward- moving theme is passed between sections in the orchestra accompanied by a steady, march-like staccato pulse. The opening B minor theme rises and falls, giving way to a faster, rhythmic section in D major. Ascending and descending scale passages are exchanged between voices with a light, springy spiccato. The music swells with crescendos and decrescendos portraying the sweeping ebb and flow of the wind. The primary minor theme returns with a dramatic unison statement in the violins, shifting modally as it builds to a momentous finale. An excellent piece for working on extended finger patterns, bowing styles, and dynamic changes.Named for the West Wind, this Grade 3 original work makes use of quarter and eighth note triplets to depict a sense of swirling motion.
